Windows 8.x share rose sharply in one 2014 estimate, but the headline describes a historical change—not current adoption. IT Pro, citing NetMarketShare, reported that the combined share of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 climbed from 12% in September 2014 to almost 17% in October. A separate StatCounter report had already found Windows 8.1 ahead of Windows 8 individually in August. These are different measurements and should not be combined into one trend.
What did “market share leaps ahead” mean?
IT Pro’s November 3, 2014 report said the combined Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 share increased from 12% in September to almost 17% in October, citing NetMarketShare. The report described this as the biggest leap in Windows 8.x share to that point. It also reported Windows XP declining from 24% to 17% over the same two months. IT Pro’s report does not provide NetMarketShare’s underlying methodology or establish how many computers were running each version.
Those figures are attributed market-share estimates, not a census of installed computers, sales totals, or a measure of present-day use.
How did StatCounter’s August figures differ?
StatCounter reported a separate result for worldwide internet usage in August 2014: Windows 8.1 had 7.5%, ahead of Windows 8 at 6.6%. It also put their combined share at 14%, above Windows XP’s 12.9% for the first time globally. StatCounter said its figures covered desktop, tablet, and console, and that Microsoft’s distinct user agent for Windows 8.1 allowed it to report that version separately. See StatCounter’s September 2, 2014 release.

StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen interpreted the result this way: “Following a mixed reaction to Windows 8, perhaps because of its radical new look, Windows 8.1 appears to be winning over users.” That was his contemporaneous assessment, not evidence that a particular design change caused the measured shift.
Why the two reports should not be treated as one series
| Report | Period and figures | Measure and scope |
|---|---|---|
| IT Pro, citing NetMarketShare | September to October 2014: combined Windows 8 and 8.1 share rose from 12% to almost 17%; Windows XP fell from 24% to 17%. | Reported market-share estimates. Detailed methodology and device scope are not stated in the article. |
| StatCounter Global Stats | August 2014: Windows 8.1 at 7.5%, Windows 8 at 6.6%, combined at 14%, and Windows XP at 12.9%. | Worldwide internet usage share across desktop, tablet, and console. |
The sources cover different periods and describe their metrics differently. They also differ in how the Windows versions are presented: IT Pro’s central comparison is the combined Windows 8.x share, while StatCounter gives individual Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 figures as well as a combined total. A value from one report cannot be substituted for a value from the other to create a continuous month-by-month series.

What the figures say—and what they do not
- In StatCounter’s August 2014 figures, Windows 8.1 individually exceeded Windows 8 worldwide.
- In IT Pro’s September-to-October comparison, the combined Windows 8 and 8.1 estimate increased while the reported Windows XP estimate declined.
- The reports do not establish that each percentage point represents a known number of installed PCs, nor do they explain why the measured shares changed.
- Neither historical report describes current Windows adoption.
Windows 8.1 support has ended
Microsoft lists January 10, 2023, as the end of support for Windows 8.1. After that date, the operating system no longer receives security updates, non-security updates, bug fixes, technical support, or online technical content updates. The historical increase in reported share is not a reason to choose Windows 8.1 for a current system. See Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 lifecycle page.
