What changes in everyday use?
Windows 11 brings a redesigned Windows experience, but the differences that matter depend on which features you use. Microsoft’s comparison lists several examples; availability can vary by edition, hardware, region and updates.

These are vendor-described feature differences, not a guarantee that every function works identically on every PC. Do not assume the upgrade will make your computer faster or improve battery life: results depend on the device and workload, and the available evidence does not establish a universal advantage.
Is Windows 11 worth upgrading to for support and security?
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 no longer receives free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance or security fixes after that date. You can continue to run Windows 10, but doing so means you do not receive those ordinary security updates.

Windows 10 version 22H2 was its final feature update. Microsoft identifies Extended Security Updates (ESU) as an option for eligible consumers and organizations; eligibility, enrollment terms and pricing depend on the applicable program, so confirm the current details with Microsoft. Windows 11 follows an annual feature-release cadence with monthly quality updates, and support duration varies by edition. See Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle FAQ and Windows 11 system requirements.
Will your PC qualify for the free upgrade?
Not necessarily. Windows 11 has minimum hardware requirements that can rule out a PC even if it runs Windows 10 well or has plenty of memory. Microsoft’s current requirements include:

- A compatible 64-bit processor or system-on-a-chip running at 1 GHz or faster, with at least two cores.
- At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
- UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, plus TPM version 2.0.
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- A high-definition display at least 9 inches diagonally, with 8 bits per color channel.
These are minimums, not a promise that every feature will work or that a particular PC will perform well. Some features require more capable hardware. Windows 11 Home also requires an internet connection and Microsoft account during initial device setup; internet access is needed for updates and some features. Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check or Windows Update eligibility guidance to check your particular device. Do not judge eligibility by age or RAM alone, and do not assume adding memory will resolve a processor, TPM or firmware mismatch.

How much does upgrading cost, and when will it be offered?
Microsoft says the Windows 11 upgrade is free for eligible Windows 10 PCs that meet the minimum requirements. The upgrade offer through Windows Update is rolled out according to the device, so an eligible PC may not be offered it at the same time as another. Microsoft recommends using Windows Update or PC Health Check to check your device and its upgrade status. See the Windows 11 upgrade FAQ.
If your computer is ineligible, replacing it with a Windows 11-compatible device is one option, not a requirement for every Windows 10 user. Consider your security needs, budget and whether your current applications and peripherals can be supported before deciding.

What should you check before installing?
A free upgrade can still involve downtime or compatibility surprises. Microsoft says the download and installation may take longer than a typical Windows 10 feature update. Its FAQ also notes that some Windows 10 features are not available in Windows 11 and that installation may remove apps known to cause upgrade problems or not work correctly.

- Check eligibility: Use PC Health Check or Windows Update, following Microsoft’s upgrade eligibility instructions.
- Back up important files: Microsoft says it always recommends backing up files before installing a new Windows version. OneDrive is one option; a local external drive can provide a separate copy. Follow the Windows 11 upgrade FAQ.
- Check critical software and devices: Confirm compatibility with the app publisher or hardware manufacturer, especially for work tools, printers, scanners and specialist accessories.
- Plan for the installation: Allow time for a larger download and installation than a routine feature update, and avoid starting when you need the PC immediately.
- Review fallback options: If you may need to return to Windows 10, check Microsoft’s current rollback instructions and time limits before upgrading. Do not assume a particular rollback window will apply to your installation.
How to decide
- Your PC is eligible and you want ongoing security updates: The free upgrade is a practical route; prepare a backup and verify essential software and hardware first.
- Your PC is eligible but you depend on a particular Windows 10 feature or older device: Check that exact workflow with its publisher or manufacturer before moving.
- Your PC is not eligible: Compare the cost of a compatible replacement with your needs, or check whether you qualify for Microsoft’s ESU program. Do not rely on unsupported hardware workarounds.
- You are considering staying on Windows 10: Factor in that ordinary free security fixes and technical assistance have ended; continued use does not restore support.
