Windows Update may not offer the upgrade right away, and Microsoft does not promise a fixed installation time. Back up important files first, and know that the built-in option to return to Windows 10 is usually available for only 10 days.
Can my PC run Windows 11?
Your PC must meet Microsoft’s Windows 11 hardware requirements. For an upgrade through Windows Update, it must also be running Windows 10 version 2004 or later. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements for the current CPU, TPM, and firmware requirements; some features require more than the minimum.
Among the listed minimums are a compatible 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a display larger than 9 inches with 720p resolution and 8 bits per color channel. The processor must appear on Microsoft’s approved CPU list.
Check eligibility
- Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app to see whether the device meets Windows 11 requirements.
- Alternatively, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- If you recently changed hardware, check eligibility again; Microsoft provides guidance for rechecking after hardware changes.

Why isn’t Windows 11 showing up in Windows Update?
An absent offer does not, by itself, mean the PC is incompatible. Microsoft stages availability and validates devices, so the timing can vary. Its recommended consumer approach is to wait for Windows Update to say Windows 11 is ready for your device, then follow the prompts.
Install any available updates for your current Windows version, restart, and check Windows Update again. Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation guidance recommends not installing Windows 11 on a device that does not meet the requirements. The Windows Update Assistant is not a universal shortcut for this upgrade: its support page says it does not run on ARM-based PCs and supports x86/64 devices. See Windows Update Assistant.

How long does the Windows 11 upgrade take, and is it free?
Microsoft says the upgrade from Windows 10 is free for eligible devices. The download is large, and the time needed depends on your internet connection; a metered connection may also incur data charges. You can use the PC while the download runs and schedule installation afterward.
Microsoft says downloading and installing Windows 11 usually takes longer than a typical Windows 10 feature update, but does not give a universal duration. Leave time for the installation and any restarts rather than relying on a specific number of minutes. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade FAQ.

Will I lose my files, apps, or accessories?
Microsoft says the default upgrade experience moves files and data to the Windows 11 installation. It still recommends backing up important files before installing a new Windows version. If you use OneDrive, confirm that syncing has finished and separately protect files that are not synced.
Most software and accessories that worked with Windows 10 are expected to work with Windows 11, but Microsoft does not guarantee every product. Check critical apps with their publishers and accessories with their manufacturers. Setup may remove apps that could cause upgrade problems or may not work correctly; Microsoft says apps known not to work correctly cannot be reinstalled, so ask the publisher about an updated version.

Can I go back to Windows 10 after upgrading?
In most cases, Windows provides 10 days to return to the previous version. Open Settings > System > Recovery and select Go back. This keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then.
The option depends on the previous-version files still being present, including the windows.old and $windows.~bt folders. Microsoft also lists removing accounts added after the upgrade and having the USB used for the upgrade, if one was used, among the requirements. Do not delete the previous Windows installation while you may need to roll back; deleting it removes the ability to use Go back. If the 10-day period has passed, Microsoft says moving back requires manually backing up files and performing a clean installation of Windows 10. That is not the same as the in-place Go back option: prepare installation media and make sure files and needed software are protected before starting.
Which Windows recovery option should I use?
Choose based on what caused the problem and what you need to preserve. These options do different jobs; Microsoft’s Windows recovery overview describes their effects.

What does a Windows 10 rollback mean for support?
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Returning to Windows 10 may solve an upgrade problem, but it does not restore Microsoft support for that operating system.
