To move to Windows 11, first check whether your specific PC meets Microsoft’s requirements. If it does, prefer the Windows Update offer for that device; use installation media only if you understand the difference between an in-place upgrade and a fresh install. If an upgrade causes trouble, use Go back for a limited time after a version upgrade, or uninstall a recent individual update if that is what triggered the problem.
What is a Windows feature update?
A feature update introduces functionality and capabilities. Microsoft says Windows 11 feature updates are typically released once per year. Quality updates arrive more frequently and mainly provide smaller fixes and security improvements. That distinction matters when choosing a recovery option: going back reverses a version upgrade, while uninstalling an update targets an individual update.
Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ
How can I determine if my device qualifies for the Windows 11 upgrade?
Eligibility is specific to the device. Microsoft’s minimum requirements include all of the following:
- A 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores that appears on Microsoft’s supported processor list.
- At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
- UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability and TPM version 2.0.
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- A high-definition display larger than 9 inches diagonally.
Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use also require an internet connection and Microsoft account during initial setup. To upgrade from Windows 10 through Windows Update, the PC must be running Windows 10 version 2004 or later. Some Windows 11 features have additional requirements.

Check with Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements and run the PC Health Check app, or open Settings > Windows Update to see whether Windows Update reports that the device is eligible. These consumer checks are not intended for PCs managed by an IT administrator; ask your organization’s IT team instead. After a hardware change, an eligibility result may take time to refresh.
Meeting the minimum requirements does not mean the upgrade will appear immediately. Microsoft stages rollout, and Windows Update validates whether a version is ready for a particular device. If a compatible PC has not been offered the upgrade, the offer may arrive later. Microsoft warns that installing Windows 11 on hardware below its minimum requirements is not recommended; unsupported devices can have compatibility problems and are not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates.

Which Windows 11 installation method should I use?
For a normal consumer PC, begin with the version offered in Windows Update. Microsoft validates and offers an upgrade for the specific device; an available offer is a stronger indication of readiness than choosing a manual installation route yourself.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Method | When it fits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | The upgrade is offered for this PC. | Use Settings > Windows Update and follow the on-screen instructions. This is the recommended starting point for a typical consumer device. |
| Windows Update Assistant | A compatible x86/64 PC is ready for a manual feature-update installation. | Microsoft’s Assistant can download and install the latest feature update on compatible x86/64 PCs. It does not run on ARM-based PCs. |
| Installation media, run from Windows | You want to upgrade the existing Windows installation using media. | Start setup while signed in to the existing Windows installation and choose the available option for keeping files and apps. |
| Installation media, booted from the media | You want a fresh installation. | This starts a clean install and erases the existing Windows installation, files, and apps. Back up what you need first. |
If Windows Update has not offered the upgrade, Microsoft provides manual methods for compatible devices; that does not make an unsupported PC eligible. Read Microsoft’s instructions for ways to install Windows 11, the Windows Update Assistant, and creating Windows installation media before choosing one.
How long does it take to upgrade to Windows 11?
There is no reliable single duration: an upgrade can take longer than a routine Windows 10 feature update, and time depends in part on internet speed. You can use the device while the upgrade downloads and may be able to schedule the restart and installation. Allow time for the installation and restart rather than planning around an exact estimate.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade FAQ
Can I move back to Windows 10 after I upgrade my Windows 10 device if I don’t like Windows 11?
Usually, yes, for a limited period after upgrading. Open Settings > System > Recovery and select Go back if it is still available. Microsoft says the option is usually available for 10 days, but the window is not guaranteed for every device. The files and folders from the previous Windows version must still be present; deleting them can remove the option.
Go back keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and resets Settings changes made since then. Accounts added after the upgrade may need to be removed first. If you used a USB drive to upgrade, keep it available.

There is also a support consequence to consider: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on that date. Returning to Windows 10 does not restore that ended support.

When Windows starts
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- Select Uninstall updates.
- Choose the recent update and follow the prompts, if Windows allows it to be removed.
When Windows will not start
Use the Windows Recovery Environment route in Microsoft’s uninstall instructions to reach update-removal options. The exact route depends on whether Windows can start and which recovery screens are available; follow Microsoft’s steps to uninstall a Windows update.
Some updates cannot be uninstalled. Removing a security update can expose the PC to risks the update was intended to address, so do so only when needed. Microsoft also suggests trying to reinstall the current Windows version first on Windows 11. For an overview of recovery choices, see Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.
