Choose ShareX if you regularly need scrolling captures, a more configurable editing workflow, or capture-to-upload actions. That recommendation reflects the features each product documents—not a controlled comparison of speed, reliability, or ease of use.
How Snipping Tool and ShareX compare
| What you need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Take a screenshot without adding another capture app | Snipping Tool | Microsoft documents several capture modes and a Windows shortcut workflow. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide covers the options. |
| Extract text from a screenshot | Either | Snipping Tool includes Text actions (OCR), and ShareX lists OCR among its features. Results can vary with the content and app version. ShareX’s official site describes its feature set. |
| Capture a long page or window by scrolling | ShareX | ShareX lists scrolling capture. Microsoft’s cited Snipping Tool guide does not list an equivalent standard capture mode. |
| Add basic markup or redact a snip | Snipping Tool may be enough | Microsoft describes post-capture actions. ShareX is worth considering if you need its broader editing and configurable actions. |
| Configure capture and post-capture actions, including uploads | ShareX | Its official site describes editing and upload actions. Check the destination and settings before using upload features. |
| Record a short screen clip | Either | Both products document recording. Check the current settings in the app you choose for audio and output behavior. |
What Snipping Tool offers on Windows 11
Microsoft documents rectangular, free-form, window, and full-screen captures. To open the video-capture overlay, use Windows+Shift+R. After capturing, Text actions can use OCR to identify text in an image. The available features may depend on Windows and app updates; see Microsoft’s current support guide.
Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog described a color picker for Windows 11 PCs and Perfect screenshot for Copilot+ PCs in a post dated July 22, 2025. Perfect screenshot is not a universal Windows 11 feature: Microsoft describes it as exclusive to Copilot+ PCs. Read the Windows Experience Blog announcement.
What ShareX adds to a capture workflow
ShareX lists region capture and annotation, image editing that includes obscuring sensitive details, scrolling capture, OCR, recording, and post-upload actions. That breadth can suit people who want capture, editing, and sharing steps in a configurable workflow. The feature list does not establish that every option is enabled by default or appropriate for every upload destination. Check the current settings and destination before sharing. See ShareX’s official feature information.

Test the workflow if reliability or privacy is critical
If you need consistent team standards, privacy controls, or dependable capture in a particular application, verify the current settings and try the workflow in that environment. The cited product documentation does not provide independent head-to-head testing, so it cannot establish which app is faster, more reliable, or easier to use for your setup.

Microsoft Learn documents a Snipping Tool launch protocol for image and video capture, including video with audio, with an option to specify whether a result is automatically saved. This is mainly relevant to developers and automation authors; most people choosing a screenshot app do not need this capability. See Microsoft Learn’s launch-protocol documentation.
