Taskbar Search and Start menu search are two ways to start a search in Windows 11. Taskbar Search opens the Search pane; opening Start and typing searches from the Start menu. They cover overlapping types of results, but Microsoft does not publish evidence that either route is universally faster or more accurate.

How are Taskbar Search and Start menu search different?

The difference is mainly how you open the search experience. Microsoft lists Start and Search as separate taskbar components: Search opens a search box or pane, while Start opens the Start menu, where you can begin typing a query. Microsoft describes overlapping results, including apps, files and settings. The routes are distinct interfaces; Microsoft’s support guidance does not establish that they have identical ranking behavior in every Windows build.

These are the user-facing routes described in Microsoft’s taskbar guidance, Windows search guidance and connected experiences documentation.

What can Windows 11 search find?

Windows Search can look beyond files stored on your PC. Depending on what is available to you and how your device is configured, results can include apps, settings and files on the device, content in a Microsoft account or work or school account, and internet results. Microsoft says Bing powers the web results described in its taskbar guidance.

That breadth does not mean every query will return every possible match. A file may not appear if its location or contents are not indexed, or if the content is otherwise unavailable to your account. Search indexing catalogs file information to help Windows find it; Microsoft explains indexed locations and options in its Search indexing in Windows documentation.

How to search from Start or the taskbar

Search from Start

  1. Open Start by pressing the Windows key or selecting the Start button on the taskbar.
  2. Type an app name, file name, setting, or other query. Results update as you type.
  3. Use the arrow keys to move through suggestions, then press Enter to open the selected result.

Search from the taskbar

  1. Select the Search box or Search icon on the taskbar, or press Windows+S.
  2. Enter your query in the Search box or pane. Microsoft’s guidance describes Best match and categories such as web, settings, documents, folders, apps and photos.
  3. Use the arrow keys to navigate suggestions and press Enter to choose one.

For keyboard shortcuts and navigation details, see Microsoft’s Windows taskbar accessibility guide.

How to show or hide the taskbar Search control

If you prefer opening searches through Start, you can hide the taskbar Search control without losing the documented Start-menu route for typing a query. To change its appearance, right-click the taskbar, open Taskbar settings, and choose the Search display you want. Microsoft documents choices including a search box, an icon with a label, an icon only, or hidden. The names and placement of these options can change with Windows updates. See Microsoft’s taskbar settings instructions.

Why might a search result be missing?

Search can only return content that is available to Windows Search. Indexed locations and content affect what it can find; the search settings let you control locations and indexing modes. To review them, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Search. Microsoft explains how indexing works and which options are available in its Windows indexing guide.

Which search route should you use?

Choose the route that fits what you are doing: use Start if you are already opening or browsing apps there, and use taskbar Search or Windows+S when you want to open the Search pane directly. Microsoft’s guidance explains the interfaces, result sources and indexing, but does not provide a head-to-head speed or accuracy benchmark. There is no documented general winner on those measures.
