Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf the Windows 11 Search bar is unresponsive or its results are missing or unexpected, try these fixes from least disruptive to most advanced: restart SearchHost.exe, run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter, check for Windows updates, reset Windows Search, and only then consider regenerating Search package data. The right fix depends on whether the interface is stuck or file results are incomplete; none of these steps guarantees a fix.
Choose a fix based on the symptom
| Remedy | Best suited to | Impact and access |
|---|---|---|
| Restart SearchHost.exe | Search panel is frozen or unresponsive | Low impact; no administrator access normally needed |
| Search and Indexing troubleshooter | Search problems or missing file results | Guided diagnostic; no manual registry changes |
| Check for Windows updates | Search issue may be related to an outdated Windows build | Installs updates; restart if requested |
| Reset Windows Search | Earlier steps have not resolved the issue | Requires administrator access; may temporarily affect result relevance |
| Regenerate Search package data | Advanced last resort after simpler fixes fail | Elevated PowerShell and registry work; restarts indexing |
1. Restart the Search process
Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance recommends ending SearchHost.exe in Task Manager. Windows starts the Search process again the next time you search.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- If needed, select More details.
- Find Search or SearchHost.exe in the process list.
- Select it and choose End task.
- Open Search from the taskbar or press Windows key + S to test it. If the problem remains, restart the device.
2. Run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter
Windows includes a troubleshooter for problems with Search and indexing. Use it when Search is not behaving as expected, especially when files are missing from results.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Go to Privacy & security, then Search.
- Select Advanced indexing options, then Advanced.
- Select Troubleshoot search and indexing.
- Follow the wizard and apply any suggested fixes.
3. Check for Windows updates
Microsoft includes checking for updates in its Windows Search troubleshooting sequence. An update may address a Windows problem affecting Search.

4. Check indexing scope and progress
If the Search panel works but file results are missing, the issue may be indexing scope or progress rather than the taskbar interface. Microsoft describes the index as a catalog of file names, properties, and, for files with text, their contents.
Windows offers two indexing modes. Classic indexes Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop by default. Enhanced indexes the whole PC, including user folders and files, and may use more system resources. The initial indexing run can take up to a couple of hours; indexing then continues in the background as data changes.

5. Reset Windows Search
If the earlier steps do not help, Microsoft provides a PowerShell script to reset Windows Search. This is a Search-specific reset, not Reset this PC. Microsoft says resetting Windows Search does not affect your files, but it may temporarily affect search-result relevance while Search recovers.
- Open Microsoft’s Windows Search troubleshooting instructions and follow the Windows 11 steps to download and run ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1.
- Use an administrator account and follow the script instructions in the Microsoft article.
- If your organization has disabled script execution, contact your work or school administrator instead of trying to bypass the restriction.
- Test Search after the reset; allow time for results to recover.
6. Regenerate Search package data (advanced)
Use this only if the simpler remedies fail. Microsoft’s advanced procedure deletes a per-user Search registry key and re-registers the Windows 11 Search package using elevated PowerShell. It restarts indexing and regenerates the registry key and AppData folder. Because it involves registry and package changes, follow Microsoft’s instructions exactly rather than copying commands from unrelated guides.
