Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Microsoft’s guidance supports a more useful approach: identify what is slowing the computer, then try the setting that targets that problem. Startup apps and resource-heavy processes are worth checking; visual-effects and power changes may help in specific situations, but Microsoft does not quantify a universal speed gain. This assessment reflects Microsoft’s published guidance, not controlled testing on a particular PC, so results depend on hardware and workload.
Start by identifying what feels slow
A slow PC can have several causes at once. Microsoft lists limited storage, too many apps launching at sign-in, outdated software, and older hardware that no longer meets modern performance needs. A setting change aimed at startup will not necessarily improve a game’s frame rate, and a visual-effects change will not fix a nearly full or failing drive.
Before changing settings, open Task Manager and check CPU, memory, and disk activity while the slowdown is happening. Look for a process that consistently uses a large share of a resource, and note whether the problem is slow startup, sluggish menus, or a particular app. These checks help choose a relevant fix; they do not prove that one process is the only cause.
Microsoft recommends checking Windows updates and optional driver updates as well. Updates often include fixes and performance improvements, but installing one is not a guarantee that a particular slowdown will disappear. See Microsoft’s tips to improve PC performance.

Disable startup apps you do not need
Apps that launch automatically can affect startup time and overall performance. In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps. Task Manager shows startup impact and more detail. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need to start automatically; an app can still be opened when you need it.
Microsoft’s startup-impact labels classify the app’s measured CPU and disk activity during startup. They are not predictions of how much faster the entire computer will feel after disabling an app.

| Task Manager label | Microsoft’s threshold definition |
|---|---|
| Low Impact | Total CPU use under 300 milliseconds and total disk use under 292 kilobytes. |
| Medium Impact | CPU use under one second but over 300 milliseconds, or disk use under 3 megabytes but over 292 kilobytes. |
| High Impact | CPU use over one second or disk use over 3 megabytes. |
These thresholds are Microsoft Support’s definitions for the labels, accessed in 2026; they are not independent benchmark results or promised user-perceived gains. Details are in Microsoft’s startup-app guidance.
Try visual-effects changes only if interface responsiveness is the issue
Windows visual effects use system resources, and Microsoft says adjusting them can improve responsiveness. To try the more aggressive option, search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open the result, and on the Visual Effects tab select Adjust for best performance.

The trade-off is a plainer interface, with some visual embellishments reduced. Microsoft does not promise a particular improvement in frame rate, boot time, or overall speed, so judge the setting by whether it helps the interface feel more responsive on your PC.
Use Best performance power mode when the trade-off suits you
Windows 11’s Best performance mode can help the CPU run at higher performance when needed, according to Microsoft, with the qualification that power use must not be a concern. Find it at Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. It is a reasonable option for plugged-in or performance-focused use; it is not a free improvement for every laptop, particularly when battery life matters.

Use a clean boot to investigate conflicts, not as a permanent tweak
If a problem began after installing software or changes unpredictably, a clean boot can help determine whether a background app or service is interfering. It is a diagnostic environment, not a general-purpose debloating method. Microsoft warns that some functionality may be temporarily unavailable while the computer is in a clean-boot state.
- Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure for your Windows version.
- Check whether the specific problem remains in the clean-boot environment.
- If it disappears, re-enable startup items and services systematically until the conflict returns, narrowing down the likely cause.
- Restore normal startup after troubleshooting, following Microsoft’s instructions.
Avoid blind lists that disable services or edit the registry. Microsoft cautions that registry modifications can have unintended consequences and recommends care and a registry backup.

Consider hardware only when the evidence points there
Software changes cannot remove every hardware limit. Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may see little improvement from these steps; upgrading the device may be the better long-term option. A storage upgrade is relevant when storage throughput is the bottleneck, not simply because the PC feels slow. Microsoft’s engineering guidance explains that boot-loaded processes use CPU and disk resources and that faster storage can mitigate the impact of significant software preload. Whether an internal SSD upgrade is possible depends on the computer’s compatibility; check the device manufacturer’s guidance before buying or installing one.
How to tell whether a tweak was worth keeping
Change one relevant setting at a time and compare the same task before and after. For a startup problem, compare startup behavior; for a resource issue, check Task Manager during the workload that triggers it. Keep a change only if it helps enough to justify its trade-off, such as reduced interface effects or greater power use. Without measurements on the same PC and workload, claims that a tweak makes Windows universally faster are not established by Microsoft’s guidance.
