KB5065789 was Microsoft’s September 29, 2025 optional, non-security preview update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. It brought a broad set of changes—including File Explorer AI actions, passkey support, accessibility updates, and gaming improvements—but availability varied by device, region, license, and rollout status. It is a historical release, not the update to seek out today.

What KB5065789 was—and which Windows versions received it

Microsoft published KB5065789 on September 29, 2025, and made the September non-security update available for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 on September 30. It was a cumulative preview update, not a new Windows version. Microsoft listed these resulting OS builds:

  • Windows 11 24H2: build 26100.6725
  • Windows 11 25H2: build 26200.6725

Many changes described in the 25H2 feature story were not exclusive to 25H2 or first created in this update. Microsoft says 25H2 carries forward features and fixes from earlier 24H2 cumulative updates; its enablement package activates features that had been held behind temporary enterprise controls. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 25H2 overview for that relationship.

KB5065789’s release notes span File Explorer, Click to Do, Settings, accessibility, passkeys, sharing, and gaming, along with fixes and a security behavior change. The notes describe features included in the release, but that does not mean every feature appeared immediately on every eligible PC.

Which features did KB5065789 add or change?

File Explorer AI actions

For supported image files, the File Explorer context menu gained AI-related actions for JPG, JPEG, and PNG files:

  • Visual Search uses the image to search the web.
  • Blur Background opens the image in Photos.
  • Erase Objects removes elements from the image.
  • Remove Background opens the image in Paint.

Microsoft’s notes said these File Explorer AI actions were not yet available in the European Economic Area. A separate action can summarize eligible OneDrive or SharePoint documents through Copilot; using it requires an active Microsoft 365 subscription and a Copilot license, as Microsoft states in its KB5065789 release notes.

Click to Do and Settings search

Click to Do gained popular-action tags and more concise summaries. Settings search results also gained links to the corresponding settings pages. Microsoft described the Settings-agent change as rolling out on Copilot+ PCs, so its presence depended on the device and rollout.

Taskbar, desktop indicators, and sharing

Users could change where hardware indicators for brightness, volume, airplane mode, and virtual desktops appear through Settings > System > Notifications. The Windows Share window also gained the ability to pin favorite apps.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

For administrators applying taskbar pinning policy, Microsoft said a restart of explorer.exe was no longer required. Users might see a policy pin within approximately eight hours, depending on the refresh interval; this was a conditional estimate, not a guaranteed delivery time.

Advanced Settings and developer details

A redesigned Advanced Settings page replaced the For Developers page. Among the options it surfaced were repository details in File Explorer, including a Git branch, diff count, and last commit message.

Accessibility and keyboard input

Narrator gained Braille Viewer, which requires Braille support to be set up, and improved feedback for reading and navigating Word documents. New keyboard shortcuts could insert en dashes and em dashes.

Passkeys and security keys

Windows added integration for supported third-party credential managers. The settings path is Settings > Accounts > Passkeys > Advanced options; Windows Hello verification is used. The release notes also describe configuring a PIN for a security key in a particular relying-party verification scenario.

Settings and notifications across monitors

More time, language, keyboard, number, currency, and regional options moved from Control Panel into Settings. Notification Center became available on secondary monitors.

Gaming and Voice Access

On supported Windows handhelds, a short press of the Xbox button opens Game Bar and a long press opens Task View; holding the button still turns off the controller. Microsoft also cited overlay performance improvements, especially on multi-monitor setups with different refresh rates.

Natural-language Voice Access commands became available on Intel- and AMD-powered Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft describes Copilot+ PCs as having an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS); that is a general hardware threshold for the Copilot+ category, not a requirement for every feature in KB5065789. See Microsoft’s NPU devices documentation.

Edit in Terminal: a note added later

Microsoft later updated the KB article to include Edit, a text editor launched from Terminal with edit followed by a file name. The article’s change log dates this addition to October 9, 2025, after the original September release.

What did the update fix, and what behavior changed?

Microsoft listed fixes in areas including Hyper-V on ARM64 with TPM and GPU paravirtualization, input and displayed characters, Windows Hello PIN setup, WSUS servicing, SMB v1 over NetBT, and protected media playback.

KB5065789 also introduced a deliberate security hardening change: inline scripts passed directly to MSHTA.exe no longer run. Scripts inside .hta files continue to work. Applications that depend on inline script invocation need to use another supported approach.

For protected playback, Microsoft said the update addressed a problem affecting certain applications using Enhanced Video Renderer with HDCP enforcement. The release note states, “Streaming services are not affected.” Microsoft’s release-health page records that later October updates addressed additional digital-audio DRM cases, so KB5065789 should not be read as a fix for every Blu-ray, DVD, or TV playback problem. Why might a feature have been missing from a PC?

Microsoft used a controlled rollout for the 2025 Update. Its September 30, 2025 guidance described offering it to eligible 24H2 devices with “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” enabled, while allowing safeguard holds where potential application or driver incompatibility was detected. Commercial administrators were advised to begin targeted deployments and validate apps, devices, and infrastructure. Details are in the Windows Experience Blog’s rollout guidance.

  • Managed-device policies and compatibility safeguards.

Should you install KB5065789 now?

No. KB5065789 was an optional preview from September 2025, and it is now a historical release. Microsoft’s original notes listed Windows Update, Business, Microsoft Update Catalog, and Server Update Services as distribution channels, with the preview offered through optional updates in Windows Update. Those historical paths are not a recommendation to install this particular package today. Check Microsoft’s current Windows update history and release-health information for the latest applicable update and any active issues for your Windows version.

The release notes also documented a 25H2 issue in which IIS or other server-side applications relying on HTTP.sys could fail to receive incoming connections after KB5065789; browsers could show ERR_CONNECTION_RESET. Microsoft later identified KB5067036 as the resolution. This is a historical issue, not evidence that it remains unresolved; consult the current release-health page before troubleshooting a present-day system.
