Some headline features had limited or gradual availability, and Microsoft later included the preview’s fixes and quality improvements in the August 12, 2025 security update KB5063878.
What KB5062660 was—and what “boosts security” gets wrong
Microsoft classified KB5062660 as a non-security preview with quality improvements. It applied to all editions of Windows 11 version 24H2 and installed OS Build 26100.4770. The update’s release date was July 22, 2025. Microsoft’s KB5062660 release page describes targeted improvements to recovery, settings, input, and system reliability; it does not characterize this preview as a security update or provide a measured security or speed improvement.
The security distinction matters: on August 12, 2025, Microsoft released KB5063878 as a security update and said it included fixes and quality improvements from KB5062660. That later update is the relevant point in the release sequence for the preview’s carried-forward changes. Microsoft’s KB5063878 page provides the successor update details.
Features and usability changes
Microsoft marked many of the announced features for gradual rollout. Availability could depend on the device or market, so their presence was not guaranteed immediately after installing the preview.

Recall and Click to Do
Microsoft said Recall became available in the European Economic Area, including the ability to export snapshots to trusted third-party apps and websites. Setting up export generates a unique code shown once. The code is needed to decrypt exports; Microsoft says it does not store or recover it. Users can reset Recall to generate another code. The update also added an advanced settings page and a reset option to delete Recall snapshots and restore default settings.
Click to Do gained actions for recognized email addresses, including starting a Teams message or scheduling a meeting. Drafting with Copilot in Word requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription, according to Microsoft’s feature notes.

Settings and Copilot+ PC features
The Settings agent is a Copilot+ PC feature, not a general Windows 11 feature available on every PC. Microsoft described it as using on-device AI to interpret requests and, with permission, automate tasks. Its initial rollout was for Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs; AMD and Intel support was described as coming later. English must be the primary display language for the described experience. On non-Copilot+ PCs, the Search box moves to the top center of Settings instead.
Microsoft also listed fixes for Settings freezing in a lid-close scenario and while saving Wi-Fi credentials. Separately, Windows Search settings were consolidated onto one page.

Recovery, Start, Snap, and input
- Quick machine recovery: When enabled, it can detect widespread issues and use Windows Recovery Environment and Windows Update to address them. Microsoft said it is enabled by default for home users.
- Restart screen: The unexpected-restart screen received a visual refresh.
- Start pins: The Configure Start Pins policy lets administrators apply a pin layout once while allowing users to change their layout afterward.
- Snap: Inline tips and keyboard shortcuts were added to the window-layout experience.
- Touch keyboard: The gamepad layout was improved for controller navigation and supports PIN sign-in from the lock screen.
Targeted fixes Microsoft listed
Microsoft’s release notes describe specific fixes, rather than a benchmark or a guarantee that every system will feel faster or more stable. Listed changes include:
- A fix for LSASS potentially stopping during machine password changes when particular audit settings are enabled.
- A fix for File Explorer Home unexpectedly displaying only one folder.
- A fix for some Thunderbolt-connected external graphics cards not being recognized.
- Input fixes involving Microsoft Changjie IME for Traditional Chinese and phonetic keyboard problems, including Hindi and Marathi, after KB5062553.
- A fix for rare device stability problems that had appeared after the May 2025 security update and later updates.
- A fix for Windows Firewall with Advanced Security Event 2042, which could show “Config Read Failed” and “More data is available.”
Known issue: Pluton provider Event ID 57
Microsoft documented an Event Viewer message that can appear at each restart after KB5062600 or a later update: “The "Microsoft Pluton Cryptographic Provider" provider was not loaded because initialization failed.” Microsoft says this Event ID 57 relates to a feature in development, does not indicate a problem with an active Windows component, and has no impact on Windows functionality. Its guidance is that no action is required; Microsoft identifies KB5064081 as addressing the issue. See Microsoft’s KB5062660 known-issues notes.

Correction: the ReFS backup fix was not part of KB5062660
Microsoft’s change log says a fix involving memory exhaustion during backup of large files on ReFS volumes was mistakenly listed under KB5062660. It belongs to KB5064081, so it should not be attributed to this preview. Microsoft’s KB5062660 change log records the correction.

These were the original release routes for a 2025 optional preview. Because KB5062660 is historical and a later update carried its fixes forward, use current Windows Update and Windows release-health guidance for a present-day servicing decision rather than treating these steps as current installation advice.

- Consumer route: Open Start > Settings > Windows Update, then check the optional updates section. Microsoft’s release page described the action as “Check for optional updates.”
- Managed devices: Microsoft listed business deployment routes, including Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
- Manual package route: Microsoft also listed standalone MSU packages in the Microsoft Update Catalog. Its individual-install sequence specified prerequisite KB5043080 before the KB5062660 MSU; the catalog files may need to be installed in a particular order.
Microsoft’s documentation history records an August 19, 2025 correction to business and WSUS next steps, a September 10, 2025 correction removing the incorrectly attributed ReFS fix, and a May 26, 2026 update to the second catalog MSU file. Those changes reinforce why the live release page—not an old saved copy—matters when checking package details.
Separate notice: Secure Boot certificates
Microsoft’s release pages also carry a separate notice that Secure Boot certificates used by most Windows devices began expiring in June 2026, with a link to its certificate-expiration and CA-update guidance. That lifecycle notice is not a feature or remedy delivered by KB5062660.
