Windows 11’s shell and File Explorer are getting documented attention, but that does not prove Microsoft’s individual apps are faster, more reliable, or better designed. Microsoft’s July 2026 progress update describes work on responsiveness, reliability and memory efficiency; the evidence is a company report, not an independent benchmark of your PC. As of September 29, 2026, Windows 11 version 26H2 had been announced as available to eligible devices running 24H2 or 25H2, with a staged rollout.
What has Microsoft improved in Windows 11?
Microsoft’s July 31, 2026, quality update describes engineering across the operating system rather than a blanket overhaul of every app. The company said it had strengthened WinUI 3 and extended it into more of the Windows shell, including Widgets and the new Run experience. It also cited work on File Explorer architecture and reliability, Windows Search, Start, Snipping Tool, boot and logon, Windows Hello, and memory efficiency in Windows and relevant Chromium/WebView2 components.
Microsoft said broader rollout of improvements would start in fall 2026. That is a roadmap statement, not a guarantee that every listed change is already on every PC. The update does not provide an independently controlled benchmark or a percentage improvement that applies across devices. Microsoft’s July quality update is best read as a report on areas of work, not proof of a specific performance gain on a particular computer.

Context menu and reliability work
On August 17, Microsoft described a redesigned File Explorer context menu that was rolling out to Windows Insiders, alongside efforts to reduce hangs and delays and improve reliability. Insider rollout means the feature was being tested with preview users; it should not be treated as a change already available to everyone. Microsoft’s File Explorer and context-menu post explains that work.

September Release Preview notes
Microsoft’s September 10 Release Preview notes described several additional File Explorer changes: Home sections retain their expanded or collapsed state; cloud-file thumbnails are more reliable; Details-pane properties are clearer; preview behavior for downloaded files is updated; and an issue that cleared address-bar contents in edit mode is fixed. These are dated Release Preview notes, so their presence there establishes preview-channel status—not immediate availability to all Windows users. The Release Preview announcement records the channel and build context.
What version 26H2 availability means
Microsoft announced general availability of Windows 11 version 26H2 on September 29, 2026, for eligible devices running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2. Microsoft says many eligible devices can move to 26H2 through a small enablement package, but availability is controlled and staged. A device may therefore not be offered the update at the same time as another eligible device. Check Windows Update for the offer on your own PC rather than assuming the announcement means an immediate upgrade for every machine.

Earlier, on August 27, Microsoft described 26H2 as being in Release Preview and said some experiences—including Windows settings backup, taskbar app actions and File Explorer enhancements—would be enabled for commercial devices. That was preview-stage information; the September 29 announcement is the later status for eligible 24H2 and 25H2 devices. Microsoft’s 2026 Update availability post has the current eligibility and rollout context.
Are Windows 11 apps getting faster?
The available evidence does not establish a universal answer. Microsoft’s update reports work on shell responsiveness and memory efficiency, but it does not publish comparative measurements for individual apps such as Outlook or Weather. Nor does extending a framework such as WinUI 3 into more of the shell prove that a particular app has been rebuilt or improved.

It helps to distinguish the operating-system shell from the apps inside it. Explorer, Start, Widgets and Run are part of the shell experience; an app’s own feature set, interface, reliability and resource use need to be judged separately. A cleaner context menu or a more reliable Explorer thumbnail does not establish that an unrelated Microsoft app has become less demanding or more complete.

When deciding whether a change matters on your PC, separate what is announced from what you can verify in your own usage. For each component, consider:

- Visual consistency and control: Does the shell or app look coherent, and can you tailor the experience to your needs?
- Responsiveness and memory: Is there a measured result for a stated device and build, or only a vendor-reported engineering goal?
- Reliability and friction: Are hangs, navigation errors or problems in a common task addressed?
- Feature completeness: Does the specific app do the everyday job you need, regardless of shell changes?
- Rollout status: Is the feature an Insider preview, a Release Preview item or broadly available?
This distinction matters because Microsoft’s announcements can describe real engineering work without proving that each user will see an immediate change—or that every built-in app will improve. The WindowsForum commentary on September 21 made a similar distinction between shell gains and lighter apps, but the dated Microsoft posts are the source for the release and feature status. WindowsForum’s September commentary is useful as framing, not as an app-by-app performance test.
