Is Windows 11 really $7.97?
Neowin’s deal search result reports a limited-time $7.97 price for Windows 11 Home and Pro, against stated regular prices of $139 and $199, respectively. The underlying offer page could not be retrieved directly, so these are reported offer details, not a confirmed price you can rely on at checkout. See Neowin’s deal listing.
StackSocial’s search-result listing describes a one-PC “Lifetime” license that is non-transferable, with a code emailed after purchase and redemption required within 30 days. Those terms come from the listing snippet and were not independently verified. Review the StackSocial listing and confirm the exact terms on the seller’s checkout page before buying. The available information does not establish that Microsoft endorses this offer.
Check whether you need to buy a license
Eligible devices running genuine Windows 10 version 2004 or later can upgrade to Windows 11 through Windows Update at no charge, provided they meet Windows 11’s hardware requirements. Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check app or your PC maker’s compatibility information to assess your device before purchasing. Minimum requirements include:
- A compatible 64-bit processor or system on a chip, running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores.
- At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
- UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability and TPM version 2.0.
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- A high-definition display larger than 9 inches diagonally.
For personal use, Windows 11 Home and Pro require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Copilot+ PCs have additional hardware requirements; those are separate from the minimums for ordinary Windows 11.

Choose the correct edition and license path
Windows 11 Home and Pro are distinct editions. Microsoft says the installed edition must match the license, so check which edition the offer provides and which one your PC needs. Activation can use a digital license or a 25-character product key. For a boxed copy bought from an authorized retailer, Microsoft documents a product-key activation path. Microsoft’s activation guidance explains the process.
Activation alone does not prove that a Windows copy is genuine. Microsoft says activation pairs a product key or digital entitlement with a device’s hardware configuration; it does not assess the copy’s authenticity or guarantee that it is genuine. Check the license’s provenance and seller, not just whether Windows activates.

What to verify before paying
Microsoft describes genuine Windows as properly licensed and recommends buying from Microsoft or a store you know and trust. - Current price: Check that the total is still $7.97 and look for taxes or other charges.
- Edition: Verify whether the key is for Windows 11 Home or Pro.
- Seller and license provenance: Identify who sells the license and what documentation or support they provide.
- Device and transfer limits: Confirm how many PCs the license covers and whether it can be transferred.
- Delivery and redemption: Check how the key is delivered and any code-redemption deadline.
- Refunds and support: Read the seller’s terms in case the key does not work or is not suitable for your device.
A packaged retail copy is a different purchase path from a digital deal listing. Microsoft documents that an authorized-retailer boxed copy uses a product key, but no particular retail listing or price is confirmed here.
