It added a Shared tab to File Explorer Home and new Magnifier controls, alongside fixes and several documented issues. This was an early preview flight—not a recommendation for everyday PCs—and Microsoft said Canary users would need a clean installation to leave for a lower-numbered channel.
What changed in Build 27783?
A Shared tab in File Explorer Home
File Explorer Home gained a Shared tab for files associated with the signed-in account. Personal Microsoft account users can see files shared with them, including items shared through email or a Teams chat. Commercial users signed in with Microsoft Entra ID can also see files they have shared with others.
Microsoft also said additional file types from Designer, Loop, Power BI, and Forms would appear in File Explorer Home’s Recent list after they were recently opened or edited. That is separate from the Shared tab: those files appear in Recent based on activity.
Magnifier controls
Magnifier added Ctrl+Alt+Minus to switch between the current magnification and 1x. New controls also let users reset magnification to fit the screen or return to their preferred magnification.

Fixes included in the flight
Microsoft listed fixes for these problems in the January 29 release notes:
- Taskbar previews that sometimes failed to appear.
- A Pinyin IME issue in which using Alt+Tab to switch windows could unexpectedly change input from Chinese to English.
- Some app windows freezing in connection with Alt+Tab.
- A crash in Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Remote Desktop failing to launch with error 0x80080005, as well as rendering problems with some remote computers.
- An Explorer.exe memory leak that could reduce performance over time.
- An intermittent failure of the
shutdown /r /fwcommand.
Known issues Microsoft disclosed
Windows Hello setup on some new Copilot+ PCs
Some users joining Canary on a new Copilot+ PC from Dev, Release Preview, or a retail Windows installation could encounter a Windows Hello PIN or biometric sign-in problem. Microsoft said affected users should be able to recreate a PIN by selecting Set up my PIN.

System File Checker
Microsoft reported that sfc /scannow showed errors every time it ran. The release notes did not specify the cause or provide a separate repair procedure.
File Explorer after restoring a window
File Explorer might not render correctly after a user minimized and then restored its window.

Hyper-V and WSL
Hyper-V-dependent features, including Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), might not work properly after the previous Canary flight. This matters especially if the PC is used for virtual machines or Linux development.
What later happened to Build 27783 issues?
Microsoft’s February 5, 2025 notes for Build 27788 identified two additional problems attributed to Build 27783. A bug caused taskbar, Search, Settings, and lock-screen surfaces to crash cyclically for a small number of Insiders; Build 27788 fixed it. That later build also fixed a SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION bugcheck affecting some Insiders on Build 27783. These follow-up fixes do not establish that every issue listed for 27783 was resolved.

Is Build 27783 safe to install?
Whether it is a reasonable choice depends on the PC’s purpose and the user’s tolerance for preview instability. Microsoft describes Canary builds as early platform changes that are not tied to a specific Windows release. Features can change, be removed, or never ship outside the Insider program; some roll out gradually to only a subset of Insiders, and localization can be incomplete during development.
For a primary PC, consider the disclosed sign-in, File Explorer, and Hyper-V/WSL problems before installing. The new Shared view or Magnifier controls may be useful, but the release notes do not establish that the build was tested on particular hardware or is suitable for a dependable daily-work system. The desktop watermark is normal for these preview builds.

Leaving Canary or moving to another channel
Microsoft’s release notes warned that leaving Canary, or switching to a channel receiving lower build numbers, requires a clean installation. That means this is not a simple channel toggle that preserves the existing Windows installation and its apps. Before joining or remaining on Canary, account for the time and preparation needed to reinstall Windows and restore the PC if you later want to move to a lower-numbered build channel.
Release details
Microsoft announced Build 27783 for the Canary Channel on January 29, 2025. The announcement was authored by Amanda Langowski and Brandon LeBlanc. Microsoft said it was not planning to release SDKs for 27xxx-series builds at that time.
