Microsoft announced Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27744 for the Canary Channel on November 6, 2024. Its main change was expanded Prism emulation support for x64 apps on Windows on Arm, including additional CPU instruction sets. The release also made smaller Start, input, Task Manager, and Settings changes, alongside a list of fixes and known issues. It was an experimental Insider build, not a stable Windows release.
What changed in Prism emulation?
Prism translates x64 applications so they can run on Windows devices with Arm processors. In Build 27744, Microsoft added support under x64 emulation for CPU features including AVX, AVX2, BMI, FMA, and F16C. These instruction-set extensions are capabilities that some applications check for before enabling particular code paths or running at all.
Microsoft said the new emulated features would be opened to any x64 application running under emulation in this preview. The company noted that some games and creative apps previously blocked by CPU requirements might therefore run. It cited Adobe Premiere Pro 25 on Arm as an example of limited use of this support in the retail version of Windows 11, version 24H2. The announcement did not give benchmark results or quantify how many apps would benefit.
The x64-only limitation
The expanded feature support applied only to x64 applications. A 32-bit application would not detect the new emulated CPU features. The same limitation applied to an x64 application that relies on a 32-bit helper program to detect CPU capabilities. Microsoft asked Insiders to report compatibility problems and performance regressions through Feedback Hub.

Other changes in the build
- Start: The “All apps” label changed to “All.”
- On-screen keyboard: Microsoft began rolling out a Gamepad keyboard layout for navigating and typing with an Xbox controller. It included button accelerators such as X for backspace and Y for the spacebar; the rollout did not mean every Insider would see it immediately.
- Task Manager: The Disconnect and Logoff dialogs gained dark-mode and text-scaling support. The Performance section began labeling disks by type.
- Storage settings: The control for detaching a virtual hard disk (VHD/VHDx) returned under Settings > System > Storage > Disks & Volumes, after being temporarily disabled in an earlier Canary build.
Fixes listed by Microsoft
Microsoft said Build 27744 addressed the following problems affecting some Insiders:
- Black screens or unresponsive displays, and Device Manager GPU errors, on some systems with older NVIDIA GPUs.
- Emoji Panel and Clipboard History failing to open in some surfaces, and clipboard history not showing copied items.
- Performance problems in Windows Sandbox.
- Dynamic refresh rate becoming stuck at 60 Hz on first boot.
- A PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA bugcheck.
- Crashes in Remote Desktop (mstsc.exe) and app crashes related to msmpeg2vdec.dll.
- JPG rotation information queries through APIs such as PowerShell.
- Unexpected Get-WindowsCapability failures that lasted until a reboot.
- Mica rendering with slideshow desktop backgrounds.
- Some apps failing to detect a connected scanner.
Known issues in the November 6 announcement
Windows Hello after a channel transition
Microsoft warned that moving a new Copilot+ PC to Canary from Dev, Release Preview, or retail could remove Windows Hello PIN and biometric sign-in. Affected users might see error 0xd0000225 and the message “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available.” The release notes said users should be able to recreate the PIN by selecting “Set up my PIN.”

Installation and desktop backgrounds
Microsoft was investigating installation rollbacks with error code 0xc190010 and an issue that could produce large black areas in desktop backgrounds across multiple monitors.

Microsoft describes Canary builds as early platform changes that are not matched to a specific Windows release. Features can change, be removed, or never ship outside the Insider program, and some features roll out to only a subset of Insiders at first. Microsoft’s channel-selection guide says people should weigh their need for stability and support against how early they want to try features: Start previewing Windows – explore new Windows features.

Leaving Canary requires a clean installation of Windows 11, so moving to the channel is a more consequential choice than simply trying a feature update. The release announcement was published by Amanda Langowski and Brandon LeBlanc on the Windows Insider Blog. Their post summed up the Prism change this way: “We’re excited to see customers able to run more apps and games that they care about on Windows on Arm!”
