Windows 11 has no supported built-in setting to make taskbar icons larger than their normal size. You can restore normal-size buttons, enlarge the whole interface with display scaling, or use Windhawk’s third-party Taskbar height and icon size mod for larger taskbar icons specifically.
The built-in Never option restores the standard size; it does not create an extra-large option. Use the steps below to choose the method that fits your needs.
Option 1: Restore the normal Windows 11 taskbar icon size
First check whether Windows is using its smaller taskbar buttons setting. This is the safest method because it uses Windows’ own Settings app.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Go to Personalization > Taskbar.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Find Show smaller taskbar buttons.
- Choose Never.
The setting has three choices:

| When taskbar is full | Uses the normal size until the taskbar becomes crowded, then reduces the buttons. |
| Never | Uses the regular Windows 11 taskbar icon and button size. |
Choose Never for the standard layout. It will not make icons larger than the default size. If you do not see this control, your Windows 11 version may not include the newer taskbar behavior settings.

Option 2: Increase the entire Windows 11 interface
Windows display scaling makes the taskbar easier to see, but it also enlarges text, application windows, menus, and other desktop elements. Use this option when the whole interface feels too small rather than when you need a taskbar-only change.
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Display.
- Under Scale & layout, open Scale.
- Choose a larger value, such as 125%, 150%, or 175%.
You can return to 100% if the desktop becomes too large or less usable.
Option 3: Make taskbar icons genuinely larger with Windhawk
For icons larger than the normal Windows 11 size without scaling the entire desktop, use the third-party Taskbar height and icon size mod for Windhawk. It can adjust icon dimensions and taskbar height independently, including settings for 32×32 icons. The usable range can vary by Windows build and mod version.

Install Windhawk
You can install it from an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command: winget install –id RamenSoftware.Windhawk
Alternatively, install Windhawk using its official installer, then open the application.
Install the taskbar-size mod
- Open Windhawk.
- Click Explore.
- Search for Taskbar height and icon size.
- Open the mod’s Details page.
- Click Install.
- Review the warning and select Accept Risk and Install.
Increase the icons
- In Windhawk, open the installed mod’s Settings tab.
- Increase the Icon size value.
- Increase Taskbar height as needed so the icons have enough room.
- Apply the changes and check the taskbar.
In the cited procedure, Icon size = 16 and Taskbar height = 34 are example values for a smaller taskbar, while Icon size = 24 and Taskbar height = 48 restore the regular arrangement. For larger icons, enter a higher icon-size value and adjust the height to match. Increase values gradually: oversized icons in a taskbar that is too short can be clipped or produce awkward spacing.

Does the Windows 11 Registry make taskbar icons larger?
Older guides commonly recommend a Registry value at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced. They create a DWORD (32-bit) Value named TaskbarSi, using these historical values:

This is not a dependable solution for current Windows 11 releases. The commonly circulated command is reg add “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced” /v TaskbarSi /t REG_DWORD /d 2 /f, but current releases may ignore the value. Do not rely on TaskbarSi=2 to enlarge the taskbar. Use the built-in setting to restore normal-size buttons, display scaling for a larger overall interface, or a maintained third-party mod for taskbar-only changes.

What about Windows 11 preview taskbar controls?
Microsoft has tested newer taskbar-sizing controls in Windows Insider preview builds, including Experimental Preview Build 26300.8758. The updated Show smaller taskbar buttons implementation was also reported in build 26300.8493 and later Experimental-channel releases. These reports do not mean the same controls are available on every retail Windows 11 installation.

On supported preview builds, the path remains Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors. The choices are Always, When taskbar is full, and Never. Some newer implementations also reduce taskbar height when using a smaller size. In older behavior, smaller icons changed the button size while leaving taskbar height unchanged.

Windows 11’s default taskbar icons are reported as 24×24 pixels, downscaled from the older 32×32 icon size. This can make custom icons appear blurry or smaller than expected even when the taskbar is using its standard size.
If only one application’s icon looks wrong, the problem may be the icon asset rather than the taskbar setting. A taskbar mod that supports a larger icon size is more likely to address the overall display.

Important cautions before using a taskbar mod
- It is not a Microsoft-supported change. Windhawk modifies Windows behavior through a third-party mod.
- Updates can break the layout. A Windows update may change the taskbar and require the mod to be updated, disabled, or reconfigured.
- Do not stack taskbar modifiers. Windhawk, ExplorerPatcher, and Start11 can interfere with one another. Disable or remove an existing taskbar customization before trying another.
- Keep a recovery route. If the taskbar behaves incorrectly, disable the mod in Windhawk or uninstall it, then restart Windows Explorer or restart the PC.

Can I make Windows 11 taskbar icons larger without an app?
Not beyond the normal size. The built-in Never option restores regular-size taskbar buttons, but Windows 11 has no supported native setting for extra-large taskbar icons.
What does “Never” mean under Show smaller taskbar buttons?
It means Windows should not switch to smaller taskbar buttons. It uses the regular taskbar icon size; it does not enlarge icons beyond the standard layout.
