Choose Windows 11 Home if you do not need Pro’s business networking, remote-access, or additional encryption features. Choose Pro when you need a specific capability such as BitLocker Drive Encryption, hosting Remote Desktop connections, joining a work or school domain, or Client Hyper-V. Pro is not established as a general speed or performance upgrade.
Windows 11 Home vs Pro: What’s the practical difference?
Microsoft describes Pro as adding advanced security and business networking features. Its feature comparison highlights BitLocker Drive Encryption, Remote Desktop, and the ability to join a domain or Microsoft Entra ID. These matter when you have a particular security, remote-access, or workplace-management task—not simply because Pro is the higher-priced edition.
Microsoft’s documentation does not establish that Pro makes routine personal use faster. For everyday tasks that do not call for Pro-only features, Home is the practical fit. That recommendation follows from Microsoft’s documented differences; it is not a claim that every Home device will suit every user.
Which Pro features might you need?
BitLocker Drive Encryption
Choose Pro if you need BitLocker Drive Encryption for the PC’s storage. Microsoft lists BitLocker among the features available in Pro editions. Check the requirements for the specific device and feature before upgrading; buying Pro alone does not guarantee every capability will work on every PC. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.

BitLocker To Go for removable drives
BitLocker To Go, available in Pro and above, supports encryption of removable storage and requires a USB flash drive. This is relevant only if you need to encrypt removable drives; it does not mean you need a particular drive model or that a USB drive is required for BitLocker encryption of the PC itself. Microsoft lists the feature and its requirement in its Windows 11 requirements documentation.
Remote Desktop hosting
Microsoft identifies Remote Desktop as a Pro feature. This is a reason to consider Pro if you need the PC to host incoming Remote Desktop connections. If you do not need that host capability, it is not a reason by itself to upgrade.

Joining a work or school domain
Pro supports joining an Active Directory domain or Microsoft Entra ID, capabilities Microsoft lists among its business networking features. Consider Pro if your organization requires the PC to join one of these environments. Check with your IT administrator about the device’s exact configuration needs.
Client Hyper-V
Microsoft lists Client Hyper-V as a Pro feature. Its requirements documentation says it needs a processor with SLAT (Second Level Address Translation) capabilities. If you need Hyper-V, confirm the PC’s processor meets that requirement before choosing Pro.

Who should choose Home, and who should choose Pro?
| Choose | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Windows 11 Home | Your use does not require Pro’s documented features, such as BitLocker Drive Encryption, Remote Desktop hosting, domain or Microsoft Entra ID joining, or Client Hyper-V. |
| Windows 11 Pro | You need at least one of those specific capabilities and your device meets its requirements. |
Do not pay for Pro on the assumption that the edition alone improves general performance. The official comparison describes feature differences, not a quantified performance benefit. Microsoft’s Windows 11 edition comparison is another place to review the feature distinction.

What to check before you buy
- Identify the feature you need. Match the task—encryption, remote-access hosting, workplace joining, or virtualization—to a documented Pro capability.
- Check the hardware requirement. Client Hyper-V needs a SLAT-capable processor, and other features may also depend on device prerequisites. Verify the requirements for the feature and PC you intend to use.
- Confirm edition and activation. Microsoft’s consumer manual-upgrade steps are for an activated Windows Home installation.
- Check the price in your region at purchase time. Microsoft’s cited upgrade material establishes the purchase routes, but not a universal current price. Price and availability may differ by region and change over time.
- Account for Home setup requirements separately. Microsoft says Windows 11 Home requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account to complete first-use setup. This is a setup condition, not a Pro-versus-Home feature advantage.
