For compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games played in windowed or borderless-windowed mode, turn on Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11. Microsoft says the feature moves compatible games to a newer presentation model that reduces frame latency; it does not promise a higher frame rate.
Turn on windowed-game optimizations
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Default settings, turn on Optimizations for windowed games.
- Restart the game for the change to take effect.
Microsoft describes this feature as transitioning compatible games from the legacy blt-model presentation to the newer flip-model. The change can reduce frame latency and enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. Microsoft’s guidance does not give a benchmark or guarantee an FPS increase. Check whether the game and display mode are eligible
- The documented support is for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games.
- The game must run in windowed or borderless-windowed mode.
- These claims do not establish the same effect for every game, graphics API, fullscreen mode, PC, or driver.
- Auto HDR and variable refresh rate require a display that supports the relevant feature.
For DirectX version information, search Windows for dxdiag, open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, and check System Information. Microsoft says Windows 10 and Windows 11 receive the latest DirectX version available for that Windows version through Windows Update. See Microsoft Support: Which version of DirectX is on your PC?.
Choose a graphics preference for one game
If your PC has more than one GPU, Windows lets you select a graphics preference for an individual game or app. This is a per-app assignment, not a universal performance setting.

- Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Custom options for apps, select the game. If it is not listed, add it using the available app-selection control.
- Select Options, choose the preference, and save:
- Let Windows decide (Power saving)
- Power saving
- High performance
Restart the game after changing its preference. Which choice makes sense depends on your hardware and the game; the setting itself does not establish that High performance will improve every system or situation.
Adjust windowed optimizations or Auto HDR for a specific app
The per-app options can turn off Optimizations for windowed games or enable Don’t use Auto HDR for the selected app. Auto HDR automatically turns on windowed-game optimizations. If you want to turn those optimizations off for an app, Microsoft says to turn off Auto HDR first.

Assess the result in the game you play
Windows’ guidance explains feature behavior and where to change settings, but provides no named benchmark or measured FPS uplift. After restarting, assess the game in the mode you actually use. If you are troubleshooting, check the game’s API and display mode, the per-app GPU assignment on multi-GPU systems, and whether Auto HDR is enabled. Change one relevant setting at a time so you can tell which change affects the behavior.
