Windows 11 Game Mode is a built-in gaming setting at Settings > Gaming > Game Mode. Microsoft says it should be on by default. For most people, leave it enabled unless you are troubleshooting a specific game or performance problem; Microsoft’s current consumer guidance does not promise an FPS increase or quantify one.
What does Game Mode do in Windows 11?
Game Mode is Windows 11’s gaming-related toggle. Microsoft’s guidance confirms where to find it and that it should be enabled by default, but does not detail all of its internal scheduling behavior or establish that it improves every game or PC. Treat it as a default Windows setting, not a guaranteed performance boost.
Microsoft’s current guidance does not provide a measured frame-rate gain for Game Mode. Results can’t be responsibly summarized as a fixed percentage based on the available official information.
Should you turn Game Mode on or off?
Start with it on, as Microsoft recommends. If you suspect a particular game is behaving differently, test that game with the setting on and off under comparable conditions, changing one setting at a time. Keep whichever setting works better for your system and game; do not assume that disabling it will improve performance.

How to check the Game Mode setting
- Open Settings.
- Select Gaming, then Game Mode.
- Check the toggle and leave it on unless you are investigating a specific issue.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 gaming guidance gives this path and says the setting should be on by default. Graphics options are in a separate area: Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
Game Mode, Xbox mode, and windowed-game optimizations are different
These settings and features serve different purposes; changing one does not mean you have enabled the others.

When should you look at other gaming settings?
If you play in a window or borderless mode
Check Settings > System > Display > Graphics for Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft says this feature targets compatible DirectX 10 and 11 games in windowed and borderless windowed modes; it is not the Game Mode switch.
If you want a console-like interface
Look into Xbox mode, which is separate from Game Mode. Microsoft’s support guidance describes choosing a supported home app and optional startup behavior for gaming handhelds. The exact availability depends on supported markets and rollout.

If you want to inspect or record a session
Windows Game Bar is a separate built-in overlay with tools including performance monitoring and recording, according to Microsoft’s overview. Its existence does not make it necessary to enable Game Mode.

There is no supported number to quote for Game Mode’s FPS effect from the official consumer guidance cited here. It does not give a controlled benchmark or guarantee that every configuration will benefit. If you are comparing performance, use the same game, scene, display settings, and background workload for each test, and change only one setting at a time.
