Windows 11 version 24H2 added a useful File Explorer improvement: you can drag files between folders represented by breadcrumbs in the address bar. It did not introduce File Explorer tabs, or all of the newer tab behaviors. Microsoft had documented tearing tabs off and merging them with another Explorer window in 2023; the ability to middle-click a folder to open it in a new tab was documented later, in 2026.
What changed in File Explorer, and when?
The changes arrived at different times, so it helps to separate the actions rather than treat them as one 24H2 feature.

How do I open a folder in a new File Explorer tab?
In the later behavior Microsoft documented in July 2026, middle-click a folder displayed on the File Explorer Home page or in the Address Bar. Windows opens that folder in a new tab. This is a File Explorer action; Microsoft’s documentation does not say that a separate utility or a newly purchased mouse is required.
Can I drag files between File Explorer address bar breadcrumbs?
Yes. In its July 30, 2024 preview notes for Windows 11 version 24H2, Microsoft documented dragging files between breadcrumbs in the address bar. Breadcrumbs are the folder or location segments that show the current path. Dragging between them lets you move a file to a different location along that path; it is distinct from opening a folder in another tab.

Microsoft listed the breadcrumb behavior as a new feature in the update’s gradual rollout section. The notes identify KB5040529 as a preview update for Windows 11 version 24H2, all editions, with OS Build 26100.1301. Those details describe the update and its feature note, not a guarantee that the feature appeared on every device immediately.
Why might these features be missing on my PC?
Windows feature updates can roll out in phases, and availability may vary by device. Microsoft explains rollout timing and feature highlights in its Windows 11, version 24H2 update history. A device running 24H2 may not have every behavior described in a preview note at the same time as another device.

The later middle-click behavior appears in Microsoft’s July 28, 2026 preview notes for KB5101684, which list builds 26200.8973 and 26100.8973. Because this is preview-note documentation, it should not be read as proof that the feature is available on every Windows installation.
For current known-issue information, consult the Windows release-health dashboard linked from Microsoft’s 24H2 update history. Microsoft’s notes may describe a feature before it is available to every user.

What to remember about 24H2 and tabs
- File Explorer tabs could be torn off and merged with another Explorer window in behavior Microsoft documented in October 2023.
- The 24H2-era improvement documented in July 2024 was dragging files between address-bar breadcrumbs.
- Middle-clicking a folder in Home or the Address Bar to open it in a new tab was documented later, in July 2026.
- Preview notes and phased rollouts do not establish that a feature is present on every PC running 24H2.
