It is an old preview build, not a current stable Windows release. Its notable changes included named Start folders, several interface updates, and an IT policy to exclude selected USB drives from BitLocker encryption. You can use its ISO for an in-place upgrade or a clean installation, but a clean install deletes files, settings, and apps.
What Windows 11 Build 22579 is—and who it was for
Microsoft released Build 22579 to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on March 18, 2022, and announced that ISO files were available at the same time. Microsoft’s archive lists it among Windows 11 version 22H2 preview builds. It was intended for preview testing, not as a stable retail release. Microsoft’s release announcement and Windows Insider build archive provide the release details.
Dev Channel features represent long-lead work and may change, be removed, or never ship. Microsoft warned, “These aren’t always stable builds, and sometimes you will see issues that block key activities or require workarounds.” This makes Build 22579 unsuitable as a default choice for a computer that needs dependable day-to-day operation. Microsoft also says moving from Dev to a lower-numbered Beta or Release Preview build requires a clean install.
What changed in Build 22579
BitLocker exclusions for selected USB drives
The most distinctive administrative change was a policy allowing IT administrators to exclude specified USB removable drives from BitLocker encryption. Microsoft described this as a way to avoid unwanted automatic or accidental encryption of storage used in specialized equipment, including video cameras, voice recorders, conferencing systems, and medical devices. Administrators configure the policy with a custom MDM OMA-URI and a hardware-ID list; it is not a typical consumer toggle. See Microsoft’s BitLocker policy documentation.

Can you download a Build 22579 ISO?
Yes. Microsoft announced ISOs for Build 22579 when it released the build. The ISO is installation media for that particular preview build; its availability does not make the build a current or supported stable version. Microsoft’s announcement confirms the release and ISO availability. Microsoft’s current Using ISOs documentation explains the general ISO installation paths.
Choose between an in-place upgrade and a clean install
| Method | How it starts | What happens to your data | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-place upgrade | Mount the ISO in File Explorer and run setup.exe. |
Choose “Keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps” to preserve them. | Installing from within an existing Windows session while keeping the current environment. |
| Clean installation | Mount the ISO and start setup, or boot the PC from USB installation media. | Choose “Change what to keep,” then “Nothing.” Files, settings, and applications are erased. | Starting over, or performing a channel change that Microsoft says requires a clean install. |
The choices and their effects are described in Microsoft’s ISO instructions. If you select “Nothing,” Microsoft explicitly warns: “A clean install with a Windows Insider Preview ISO will erase all of your files, settings, and applications.”

How to install from an ISO
For an in-place upgrade
- Back up important data before changing Windows, especially when installing a preview build.
- Obtain the ISO for the build you intend to install and save it on the PC.
- In File Explorer, right-click the ISO and select Mount.
- Open the mounted drive and run
setup.exe. - When prompted what to keep, select Keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps, then continue through Setup.
For a clean installation from USB
- Back up files you need to keep. A clean installation removes files, settings, and applications.
- Prepare a USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating bootable installation media erases the drive’s existing contents.
- Mount the ISO in File Explorer and copy its contents to the bootable USB drive, following Microsoft’s ISO instructions.
- Restart the PC and boot from the USB drive to start Windows Setup.
- In Setup, select Change what to keep, then choose Nothing and proceed only if you are ready to erase the installation’s files, settings, and applications.
Microsoft specifies an 8 GB minimum for the bootable USB in its current ISO documentation. Check that the selected drive is the installation USB before preparing it, and copy off anything on it that you want to retain.
