Games are among the applications that may be affected, but Microsoft has not said that all games—or all PCs running Windows 11 26H2—are crashing. The confirmed affected versions are Windows 11 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2.
What the Windows 11 crash issue is
The problem involves Windows’ built-in handling of AC-3 audio, not a general graphics or gaming failure. Microsoft’s release-health notice says some applications that require Windows to decode AC-3 may close unexpectedly. Games are one possible category, alongside other applications that use that decoding path.
Microsoft says the affected component is most commonly used by legacy applications that depend on Windows’ built-in audio decoding. Many modern applications do not use this path and are unlikely to encounter the issue. The notice does not identify a complete list of affected games or estimate how many users are experiencing crashes.
Which Windows versions and updates are involved?
Microsoft identifies updates released on and after September 22, 2026, as the starting point for the issue. Its notice lists Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 as affected, and names OS Build 26300.9550 and KB5124010 in its release-health entry.

The 26H2 feature-update rollout is a separate event. Microsoft announced controlled availability of Windows 11 version 26H2 on September 29, 2026, for eligible 24H2 and 25H2 devices. Some eligible devices move to 26H2 using a small enablement package, and Microsoft may apply compatibility holds during rollout. The crash issue, however, is tied to updates released beginning September 22—not solely to installing 26H2. See Microsoft’s 26H2 update history and its Windows 11 2026 Update availability announcement.
What symptoms to look for
The failure can appear differently depending on what an application is doing. Microsoft says an affected app may fail to launch, close without warning, or continue working until a feature such as music playback is used. A crash that happens while a game starts or plays audio could fit the documented pattern, but the symptom alone does not prove AC-3 decoding is the cause.

What is known about specific game reports
TechRadar’s October 5, 2026 report relayed individual complaints involving Fallout: New Vegas, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Wardogs. The users associated their crashes with the September preview update, and some reportedly said removing the update stopped the crashes. These are anecdotal reports, not Microsoft-confirmed affected titles or proof that the AC-3 issue caused each reported crash. They also do not establish how common the problem is. TechRadar’s report provides the individual examples.
What to do if a game or app is crashing
As of Microsoft’s October 2, 2026 update to the release-health notice, the company said it was working on a resolution in a future Windows update. It gave no target release date and listed no specific consumer workaround. Check Microsoft’s release-health page for a newer status before changing your system.

If the problem began after a recent Windows update, note the update date and KB number, your Windows version, the affected application, and whether the crash occurs at launch or when audio plays. This information can help distinguish a possible match from an unrelated game, driver or application problem. Do not assume that uninstalling an update is a confirmed fix: although some users in TechRadar’s report said removing the September preview update stopped their crashes, Microsoft has not published that as a workaround.

“Windows 11 26H2 bug hits gamers with crashes” can make the issue sound exclusive to the newest release. Microsoft’s published scope is broader: affected Windows 11 versions include 24H2 and 25H2 as well as 26H2, and the trigger it identifies is installation of updates from September 22, 2026, onward. The issue is also limited to applications using the relevant Windows AC-3 decoding path, rather than gaming as a whole.
