Windows 11 24H2 did cause documented problems for some games and a separate NVIDIA driver compatibility issue that could leave affected PCs without a display after upgrading. Those incidents were real, but Microsoft’s records do not show how many players were affected or establish that gaming was broadly unusable. The right fix depends on whether you have a game freeze, crash, display loss, or a performance change.
What Windows 11 24H2 gaming issues were documented?
Microsoft recorded reports that some games could become unresponsive after a PC upgraded to Windows 11 24H2. Its Windows 11 release-health record later marked the issue resolved through a software update. That establishes a genuine compatibility incident, not that all games or all 24H2 systems were affected.
A different issue concerned certain NVIDIA display-driver versions. Microsoft documented a compatibility safeguard for systems that could lose display output after upgrading to Windows 11 24H2 or later. That is an upgrade-readiness problem, not the same issue as a game freezing while Windows is running.
Historical reporting also described Ubisoft temporary fixes that mitigated crashes in Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, while some performance issues could remain. That reporting concerns the incidents at the time; check each game’s current patch notes for its present status.

Identify the symptom before changing settings
A game crashing after a Windows update does not, by itself, prove that 24H2 caused it. Record what changed and narrow down the symptom before trying a workaround:
- Windows version, build, and the date the update installed.
- The game title and its installed patch or version.
- GPU model and display-driver version.
- Whether the problem is launch failure, a freeze, a crash, a black screen or other display loss, or lower performance such as stuttering.
These details help distinguish a game-specific compatibility problem from a driver upgrade block or an unrelated performance change. Check the current Windows release-health page and the game publisher’s notes for the exact title and issue.

NVIDIA display driver not ready for Windows 11 24H2
If Windows Update is withholding 24H2 because of the NVIDIA compatibility safeguard, follow Microsoft’s NVIDIA display-driver guidance rather than forcing the upgrade:
- Install an updated NVIDIA display driver that addresses the compatibility issue.
- Check Windows Update again and wait for Windows to offer the 24H2 upgrade.
- Do not use Update now or the Media Creation Tool to bypass the hold before installing the updated driver and receiving the Windows Update offer.
The safeguard is intended to prevent affected systems from upgrading into a possible loss-of-display problem. It is distinct from a game crashing or freezing after an upgrade.

Try per-game graphics settings for a rendering problem
Windows lets you change graphics preferences for an individual game. These options may help with a game-specific rendering issue, but they are not a universal fix for 24H2 crashes, freezes, or driver compatibility problems.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game from the app list, or add it if needed.
- Open the game’s options and, on a system with more than one GPU, choose a GPU preference if appropriate. You can also turn off Optimizations for windowed games for that app.
- Save the change and restart the game.
Microsoft says windowed-game optimizations target DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed modes. Disabling the option is therefore a targeted test for those conditions, not a general remedy for every game stuttering after a Windows update.

Check Windows 11 support status before deciding what to do next
Microsoft’s release-health information identifies Windows 11 25H2 as the latest version. Eligible unmanaged Home and Pro devices running 24H2 are scheduled to receive the 25H2 update automatically. Microsoft lists October 13, 2026, as the end-of-updates date for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro; check the release-health page for current details and applicability to your edition.
If the problem persists, use the Windows version, game patch, GPU and driver version, and symptom you recorded to compare the relevant Microsoft and game-vendor notes. The documented remedies are issue-specific updates, compatible drivers, or per-game settings—not a single universal registry tweak, driver rollback, or Windows downgrade.
