Microsoft offers a one-time $30 USD consumer option for Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU), but eligible users do not necessarily have to pay: Microsoft also lists enrollment at no additional cost through settings sync or by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, and enrolled eligible consumer PCs can receive critical and important security updates through October 12, 2027. Regional terms and device eligibility apply.
What the Windows 10 security update fee covers
The $30 USD price is one of three consumer enrollment routes Microsoft lists for Windows 10 ESU. It is a one-time purchase, or a local-currency equivalent, plus applicable tax—not a recurring annual consumer fee. Microsoft also offers enrollment at no additional cost when a user syncs PC settings, or by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. Choices and availability may vary by region. Microsoft’s consumer ESU guidance lists the current options.
Microsoft says an ESU license can cover up to 10 devices under its stated terms. The Microsoft account used to enroll is required. ESU is a security-maintenance extension, not a return to full Windows support: it provides critical and important security updates, but not new features, nonsecurity updates on request, design changes, or general Windows 10 technical support.
Who can enroll in consumer ESU
The consumer offer is for eligible personal-use PCs running Windows 10 version 22H2 in Home, Pro, Pro Education, or Workstations editions. The device must have the latest Windows update and the Windows 10 ESU Licensing Preparation Package (KB5126256) installed. Enrollment must be completed using an administrator Microsoft account; child accounts cannot enroll.

Consumer ESU is not intended for commercial scenarios. Microsoft excludes devices in kiosk mode, joined to Active Directory or Microsoft Entra, or enrolled in mobile device management (MDM); Microsoft Entra-registered devices are an exception to the stated exclusion. Organizations should check commercial licensing rather than assume the consumer price or eligibility rules apply.
How to enroll a Windows 10 PC
- Install the latest Windows 10 updates, including the ESU Licensing Preparation Package (KB5126256), and sign in with an administrator Microsoft account.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- If the PC is eligible, select the ESU enrollment link shown there and follow the on-screen instructions. The enrollment flow presents the available settings-sync, Rewards-points, or purchase route. If you are enrolling through settings sync, follow the on-device prompt.
Microsoft says consumers may enroll until the program ends. Enrolling later does not extend the program’s stated coverage endpoint: eligible enrolled PCs receive updates through October 12, 2027.

Windows 10 support has ended
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A PC can continue to run after that date, but devices outside a supported arrangement no longer receive ordinary Windows security and reliability fixes. Antivirus software is not a substitute for operating-system security updates; Microsoft makes that distinction in its ESU FAQ.
For eligible consumer PCs enrolled in ESU, Microsoft states that updates continue through October 12, 2027. That coverage is limited to critical and important security updates delivered through Windows Update, rather than feature updates or general technical support.

Consumer ESU and commercial ESU are different
The $30 consumer option should not be confused with organization licensing. Microsoft Learn lists commercial Windows 10 ESU at $61 USD per device for year one, with the price doubling for each consecutive year for up to three years. Commercial customers cannot buy a partial year; year one begins in November 2025, and a customer enrolling in a later year must purchase missed earlier coverage because updates are cumulative. Microsoft also describes certain cloud and virtual-machine arrangements where ESU may be available at no additional cost, subject to the service and license conditions. For example, Windows 10 endpoints connecting to Windows 365 Cloud PCs may be entitled to ESU for up to three years with an active Windows 365 subscription. These are organization-specific provisions, not extra free enrollment choices for consumer PCs.

Regional terms and related Microsoft updates
Microsoft notes that consumer ESU choices and timing may vary by region, including the European Economic Area (EEA), even though updates are applied consistently across supported areas. Euroconsumers said on September 22, 2025, that Microsoft would provide EEA consumers a free one-year ESU extension through October 13, 2026, following its advocacy. That account concerns the EEA arrangement and should not be generalized to users elsewhere. Check Microsoft’s enrollment screen and regional guidance for the terms available to your device.
Microsoft separately said that Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 would continue receiving security updates through October 10, 2028, with feature updates through August 2026, and that Microsoft Defender Antivirus security intelligence updates would continue through October 2028. Those application and antivirus timelines do not extend general Windows 10 support or replace ESU for the operating system.
Choose between ESU, upgrading, and replacing the PC
