Microsoft’s Windows 10 KB5052077 preview update documented a fix for an OpenSSH service startup failure that was preventing SSH connections. It applied to Windows 10 version 22H2 and was released on February 25, 2025, as OS Build 19045.5555. It was a targeted fix—not a general remedy for every SSH connection problem—and Windows 10 support has since ended.

What KB5052077 fixed

Microsoft’s release notes said the affected OpenSSH service failed to start, which stopped SSH connections. The notes also described a lack of detailed logging and the need to run the sshd.exe process manually. Microsoft marked this known issue as fixed in KB5052077. Microsoft’s KB5052077 release notes

The documented fault was service startup. The release notes do not claim that the update fixes SSH authentication failures, firewall rules, DNS, routing, client settings, or other unrelated connection problems.

Which Windows 10 version received the update?

KB5052077 was for Windows 10 version 22H2, across editions. Microsoft dated the update February 25, 2025, and listed it as OS Build 19045.5555. Microsoft Support and Microsoft’s Windows 10 release information list the same KB, build, and date.

What Microsoft said about the issue before the fix

In a January 29, 2025 notice, Microsoft said it had received reports that the OpenSSH service failed to start after the October 2024 security update. It described the service as failing without detailed logging and requiring manual intervention to run sshd.exe. Microsoft said a limited number of enterprise, IoT, and education devices were affected, and that it was investigating whether Home and Pro customers were affected. That notice did not establish a broader impact or provide a count of affected devices. Microsoft’s January 29, 2025 notice

How KB5052077 was distributed at release

KB5052077 was an optional, non-security preview quality update—not a separate SSH utility. The delivery route depended on how the device was managed; these routes distributed the update rather than offering different fixes.

Deployment context Release-time route
Individual device Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, where the preview appeared under Optional updates.
Catalog or managed deployment Microsoft also listed the update in the Microsoft Update Catalog for administrators and other supported deployment workflows.
Windows Update for Business Microsoft said the changes would come through the next security update for Windows Update for Business, rather than through that channel as this preview.

These are historical release details, not a recommendation to install this preview now. Check the KB’s installation section for the deployment guidance that applies to a particular system. Microsoft’s installation and availability details

Prerequisites and uninstall considerations for administrators

Microsoft listed different servicing-stack prerequisites for particular deployment scenarios. The applicable prerequisite depends on the image or package route, so administrators should follow the KB’s installation instructions rather than assume one prerequisite applies to every device.

Windows 10 support status now

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after that date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Because KB5052077 was a 2025 preview, do not treat it as a current general update recommendation; check Microsoft’s current support and servicing options for the specific deployment.
