If an older game asks for DirectPlay, you usually do not need a separate download. DirectPlay is an optional legacy Windows component; enable it through Windows Features instead of downloading an installer from an unfamiliar site.
Enable DirectPlay through Windows Features
On Windows 10, the commonly documented Control Panel route is:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand Legacy Components.
- Check DirectPlay, select OK, and let Windows apply the change.
The navigation labels are corroborated by a Microsoft Q&A response, while Microsoft Learn identifies DirectPlay as an optional component under Optional Components > Legacy Components. Labels can vary by Windows 10 build or device-management policy. (Microsoft Learn: Compatibility Cookbook; Microsoft Q&A)
Why a separate DirectPlay download is the wrong fix
DirectPlay is installed as a Windows component, not as a standalone third-party program. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime page explicitly says that running its package makes no change to DirectPlay. That package is therefore not a substitute for enabling the Windows feature. Microsoft says DirectX 11.3 and 12 are included with Windows 10 and DirectX updates are delivered through Windows Update. If you are troubleshooting a DirectPlay prompt, use Windows Features rather than a random “DirectPlay installer” or a DirectX redistributable.
What if Windows or the game offers to install DirectPlay?
Windows can install some optional components on demand. Microsoft’s Compatibility Cookbook describes DirectPlay being installed locally as an optional Windows component and says an application referencing it can be paused while Windows asks permission to install it. Elevation may be required if the user is not an administrator. That detailed behavior is documented for Windows 8.1, so the exact prompt should not be assumed to appear identically on every Windows 10 device. (Microsoft Learn: Compatibility Cookbook)

- Wired Controller, USB cable: 1.8M.
- Compatible with Switch (version 3.0.0 or above), Windows, Raspberry Pi devices.
- Rumble vibration.
- Support turbo function.
If a Windows feature-install prompt appears, follow its Windows-provided instructions. If it does not, try the Control Panel steps above; a managed device may restrict optional-feature changes, in which case an administrator may need to apply them.
DirectPlay may not be enough to make an old game work
Enabling the component only addresses the game’s request for DirectPlay. It does not establish that the game is compatible with your Windows 10 build, that its other dependencies are present, or that its online multiplayer services still operate. Those questions depend on the specific game and its current service status.
