Windows 10 Home is the consumer edition; Pro adds business-oriented capabilities and is the usual step up for small organizations. Enterprise and Education are organization-focused editions with different licensing and management contexts. But standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so choosing an edition is only part of the decision: check whether your installation is covered by a separate lifecycle, enrolled in Extended Security Updates (ESU), or ready to move to Windows 11.

Edition is not the same as version

Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education are editions. They identify the Windows licensing and capability tier. Version 22H2 is a release—the final general-availability release of Windows 10. The edition name alone does not tell you whether an installation is still supported.

For standard Windows 10 22H2 Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education, Microsoft ended support on October 14, 2025. Standard installations should not be described as receiving regular security updates after that date. Microsoft’s lifecycle pages cover Windows 10 Home and Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise and Education.

How the four editions differ

Windows 10 Home

Home is the baseline consumer edition for personal PCs. It is not the usual starting point for organizational edition management; Microsoft documents supported upgrades from Home to Pro and several other destinations, subject to the route and license.

Windows 10 Pro

Pro is the business-oriented step up from Home. It is often the relevant edition when a person or small organization needs an organizational feature or management capability that Home does not provide. Do not rely on an old feature checklist to decide: verify the specific capability against Microsoft documentation for the exact Windows release and license.

Windows 10 Enterprise

Enterprise is an organization-focused step-up from Pro. Microsoft documents subscription activation for qualifying, supported devices, rather than as a generic consumer purchase. Eligibility, device state, identity setup, and subscription terms determine whether a Pro device can step up.

Windows 10 Education

Education is intended for education licensing and deployment contexts; it is not simply a school-discount name for Enterprise. Microsoft describes Pro Education as analogous to Pro and Windows Education as analogous to Enterprise. The institution, licensing channel, and entitlement determine which edition and activation route apply.

Microsoft’s documented relationships help explain the edition ladder, but they are not a complete feature-by-feature comparison. A capability associated with Enterprise should not automatically be assumed to be included in Education, or available in the same way across releases.

Which edition makes sense for your situation?

Situation What to consider
Personal PC Home is the consumer baseline. Move to Pro only when you need a specific capability or management route supported by that edition and your license.
Small organization Pro is the typical step up. Confirm the exact required feature and whether your organization’s device and licensing setup support it.
Large or centrally managed organization Enterprise may be appropriate where the organization has the required license and device/identity prerequisites. Check subscription activation terms, not just the edition name.
School-managed PC Ask the institution which Education or Pro Education entitlement and deployment method it provides. Eligibility and licensing depend on the institution and channel.

For any edition, make the decision around the feature you actually need—such as a management, security, virtualization, or remote-access capability—and confirm that it is supported for the installed release. Historical feature tables are not a safe substitute for current edition documentation.

Can you upgrade between editions?

Yes, Microsoft documents supported edition-upgrade routes. Available paths include Home to Pro, Home to Pro Education or Education, Pro to Pro Education, Education, or Enterprise, Pro Education to Education, and Enterprise to Education. The supported method and whether a restart is required vary by route. Consult Microsoft’s Windows edition upgrade documentation before changing a device.

  • Reassuringly consistent. Have confidence that your applications will work. Familiar deployment and update tools. Accelerate adoption with expanded deployment policies.
  • Powerful security. Safeguard data and access anywhere with hardware-based isolation, encryption, and malware protection built in.

Subscription activation is a distinct organizational route, not a general-purpose way for any user to buy a higher edition. Microsoft’s subscription activation guidance describes Enterprise step-up for qualifying, supported Pro or Enterprise installations under the required Microsoft Entra identity and device conditions. Education step-up requires Pro Education with a digital license and an eligible education subscription and tenant. If a subscription expires or is reassigned, the upgraded device can return to Pro or Pro Education.

Windows 10 support exceptions and next steps

LTSC and LTSB releases

Enterprise LTSC/LTSB releases follow product- and version-specific lifecycle policies; the standard 22H2 end-of-support date does not apply to every such installation. Microsoft’s Windows release information lists Enterprise LTSC 2021 mainstream support through January 12, 2027; Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 extended support through January 13, 2032; Enterprise LTSC 2019 extended support through January 9, 2029; and LTSB 2016 extended support through October 13, 2026. These dates apply only to the named products and releases.

Extended Security Updates

Microsoft’s Windows 10 ESU program provides security updates past the standard end-of-support date for enrolled PCs. Eligibility and terms depend on the applicable ESU program, so check Microsoft’s current Windows 10 ESU information rather than assuming an edition name alone provides coverage.

Move to a supported Windows version

Microsoft directs users with compatible devices to upgrade to Windows 11 to remain supported, or to replace incompatible hardware with a Windows 11 PC. Its Windows end-of-support guidance explains the options. The right edition comparison matters most after you have established which supported Windows release and license the device can use.
