ESU does not restore full Windows support: it adds no new features or general non-security fixes. Whether you can enroll, what it costs, and how long coverage lasts depend on your device and region.
What Windows 10 ESU does—and what it does not
Microsoft ended standard support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. PCs still run, but without ESU they no longer receive regular security updates or ordinary technical support. Microsoft warns that antivirus software alone is not enough to replace operating-system updates. Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support guidance
ESU is a limited security-update bridge. Microsoft says it includes critical and important security updates only. It does not include new features, customer-requested non-security updates, or design changes. Support is limited to help with ESU license activation and installing ESU updates. Who is eligible for consumer ESU?
The consumer offer is generally for personal-use PCs running Windows 10 version 22H2 in supported markets. A Microsoft account is required. Organization-managed devices and devices enrolled in enterprise licensing programs are excluded from this consumer route. Windows LTSC and LTSB editions follow separate lifecycle policies, so check the lifecycle information for the exact edition rather than assuming consumer ESU applies. Microsoft’s eligibility guidance

Commercial customers use a separate ESU program with its own licensing and schedule. Administrators should confirm the device’s licensing and servicing channel against Microsoft’s commercial ESU information.
How to check the offer and enroll
On an eligible personal PC, enrollment is completed through the built-in Settings flow. The September 8, 2026 Microsoft Support article specifies that the PC must first have a Windows 10 22H2 security update released on or after October 14, 2025, and then the ESU licensing preparation package KB5126256. The package prepares the licensing and enrollment components; it does not itself enroll the device or provide ongoing security updates. Microsoft Support: KB5126256 licensing preparation package

- Confirm eligibility. Check that the PC runs Windows 10 version 22H2, is used personally rather than managed by an organization, and has a Microsoft account available.
- Install the required updates. Install a Windows 10 22H2 security update dated October 14, 2025 or later, then install KB5126256 using Microsoft’s package guidance.
- Complete enrollment in Settings. After preparation, use the ESU enrollment option shown in Windows Settings and follow its prompts. A package installation alone is not enrollment.
- Review the terms shown on the PC. Check the available enrollment method, any payment or account conditions, and the stated coverage end date for your region before confirming.
How much does consumer ESU cost?
Microsoft’s current consumer guidance lists three enrollment methods. These are Microsoft’s listed options, not a guarantee that every option appears in every country or on every device; regional availability and timing can vary. Check the offer on the eligible PC and Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support page.
| Enrollment method | Microsoft’s stated terms |
|---|---|
| Sync PC settings | Enroll at no additional charge when syncing PC settings. |
| Microsoft Rewards | Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. |
| One-time purchase | $30 USD plus applicable tax, or local-currency equivalent, as a one-time payment. |

How long does ESU last?
Consumer coverage dates are not uniform across Microsoft’s localized guidance. Current consumer guidance in some locales says enrolled Windows 10 devices receive critical and important security updates through October 12, 2027, while older Microsoft pages may still show the original one-year consumer period ending October 13, 2026. Because Microsoft says consumer timing can vary by region, use the date displayed in your local offer and Microsoft’s page for your country rather than applying one date worldwide. Microsoft’s consumer ESU guidance and Microsoft’s lifecycle information
The commercial schedule is separate: Microsoft’s lifecycle FAQ lists commercial ESU Year 1 through October 13, 2026, Year 2 through October 12, 2027, and Year 3 through October 10, 2028. Those dates do not mean every consumer PC receives three years of coverage. Microsoft’s commercial ESU FAQ

Should you enroll, upgrade, or replace the PC?
ESU makes sense for an eligible personal PC you need to keep using while you delay a transition. It is not a substitute for deciding on a supported device for the longer term. Compare the practical options:
- Enroll in ESU if your PC qualifies, the regional offer and coverage period meet your needs, and you want a temporary security-update bridge.
- Upgrade to Windows 11 if your current PC is eligible and you are ready to move to a supported Windows version.
- Replace the device if it cannot upgrade or you are ready to move on. Microsoft recommends backing up files before moving to another PC. Microsoft’s transition guidance
Before deciding, verify the Windows edition and version, whether the PC is personally used or organization-managed, the local ESU price and end date, and whether the device can upgrade to Windows 11. ESU does not require buying new hardware.
