If your Windows 10 camera is not working, first check its physical switch or connection, then verify Windows camera permissions. Next, test the camera in the Windows Camera app to see whether the problem affects every app or just one. These seven fixes move from quick checks to driver and hardware troubleshooting.

1. Check the camera, shutter, and connection

Start with anything that can physically block or disconnect the camera.

  • For a USB webcam, reseat its cable and try a different USB port.
  • On a laptop, check for a privacy shutter, camera switch, or keyboard camera button. Make sure the shutter is open and the switch is on.
  • If possible, connect the webcam to another device. If it fails there too, the camera or cable may be faulty; if it works, focus on the Windows PC and its settings.

Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting guide recommends checking the camera’s connection and physical controls.

2. Allow camera access in Windows 10

Windows 10 has separate controls for device access, Microsoft Store apps, and desktop apps. A camera can be detected but unavailable to an app if the relevant permission is off.

  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera.
  2. Turn on camera access for the device and for apps.
  3. Under the Microsoft Store app section, enable access for the app you want to use.
  4. For a browser or many video-conferencing programs, turn on Allow desktop apps to access your camera.

If a device-level control is unavailable or locked, the PC may be managed by an organization; ask its administrator to check the policy. See Microsoft’s camera permission instructions.

3. Find out whether the problem is one app or the camera itself

Open Start, search for Camera, and launch the Windows Camera app. If it shows a live preview, the camera and basic Windows access are working; the problem is more likely specific to another app.

4. Run Microsoft’s camera troubleshooter

Open the Get Help app and run Microsoft’s automated camera troubleshooter. Follow its prompts and test the camera afterward. If the troubleshooter does not fix the issue, continue with the manual steps rather than assuming the camera is defective.

5. Check antivirus and firewall settings

Some security software can block camera access. Review its camera, privacy, or app-control settings for a block affecting Windows Camera or the app you are trying to use. If you need to test a security setting, follow the security vendor’s instructions and restore your normal protection after testing.

6. Check whether Windows detects the camera and its driver

Use Device Manager to determine whether Windows sees the camera and to inspect its driver.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Look for the camera under Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. If you find it, check whether it is enabled. Open its properties to inspect the device status.
  4. Try Update driver. If the problem began after a driver update, open the device’s properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if that option is available.
  5. If the camera is missing, choose Action > Scan for hardware changes. You can also uninstall the camera device and scan again to prompt Windows to reinstall it.
  6. Restart the PC and test the camera after a driver or device change.

If the camera does not appear in Device Manager after scanning, check the PC or camera maker’s instructions for the exact model. Microsoft’s Windows camera troubleshooting steps include driver and detection checks.

7. Match the fix to the error or camera model

Use error codes as clues

An error message can point toward a useful branch, but it is not a guaranteed diagnosis.

Error What it can indicate What to check
0xA00F4244 (NoCamerasAreAttached) Windows cannot detect a built-in or external camera. Check the connection and physical controls, then Device Manager and the camera driver.
0xA00F4243 Another app or process may be using the camera. Close other camera-using apps and try again.
0x80070005 Access is denied. Review Windows camera permissions and security-software controls.
0xA00F4292 Access may be restricted by policy. Check whether a device administrator controls camera access.
0xA00F4294 The video stream failed to start. Check app selection, camera use by other programs, and the driver.

Microsoft says 0xA00F4244 (NoCamerasAreAttached) appears when Windows fails to recognize a camera; missing, outdated, or corrupted drivers are among the possible causes.

Consider the generic USB Video Device driver

For a compatible USB webcam, Microsoft documents switching to the built-in USB Video Device driver, which uses the USB Video Class (UVC) standard. This can help when the manufacturer’s driver is not working, but the generic driver may not support every manufacturer-specific feature, including some Windows Hello functions. Check the camera maker’s guidance if you rely on specialized features.

Check compatibility before replacing a camera

If a camera remains undetected after the connection, permission, and driver checks, contact the PC or camera manufacturer for model-specific guidance. Microsoft notes that some cameras designed for older devices are incompatible with Windows 10 and may need replacement. For a replacement USB webcam, check compatibility with your PC and Windows setup, UVC support, and whether it provides any special feature you need.

Windows 10 support status

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. The PC continues to work, and Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11; this end of support does not prevent you from trying the camera troubleshooting steps above.
