Microsoft released Windows 10 update KB5036892 on April 9, 2024, as a security and quality update. It brought Windows 10 versions 22H2 and certain 21H2 editions to OS Builds 19045.4291 and 19044.4291, respectively. Microsoft documented no additional issues in the release notes at launch, but later listed problems involving Copilot preview, Microsoft Connected Cache, profile-picture changes, and VPN connections. KB5036892 itself is no longer available through Microsoft release channels as of March 31, 2026.

What’s new in Windows 10 update KB5036892?

KB5036892 was released on April 9, 2024. Microsoft classifies it as a security update with quality improvements. For Windows 10 version 22H2, it includes improvements from supported Windows 10 version 21H2 editions. For supported 21H2 editions, Microsoft says it includes the quality improvements from KB5035941, released March 26, 2024, plus miscellaneous security improvements to internal OS functionality.

The update applied to Windows 10 version 22H2, all editions, and the following version 21H2 editions: Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, Enterprise Multi-Session, Enterprise LTSC 2021, and IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021. The resulting builds were 19045.4291 for version 22H2 and 19044.4291 for version 21H2. Microsoft’s KB5036892 release notes describe the release scope and supported editions.

What broke after the Windows 10 April 2024 update?

Microsoft’s current notes list issues associated with the April 9, 2024 update or later updates. The list is separate from the release-day statement that “No additional issues are documented for this release.” That statement described what was documented at release; it does not mean no issue was documented later. Microsoft’s notes do not establish how frequently these problems occurred, and they were not independently tested here.

Copilot preview: desktop icons and vertical taskbars

  • Icons across multiple monitors: While using Copilot in Windows (preview), desktop icons may move unexpectedly between monitors or become misaligned. Microsoft says a newer Copilot experience, gradually rolling out on devices with KB5039299 or later, addresses this issue.
  • Vertical taskbar: Copilot in Windows (preview) is not supported when the taskbar is positioned vertically on the left or right side of the screen. Microsoft says the newer Copilot experience rolling out with KB5039299 or later addresses this as well.

Microsoft Connected Cache may be bypassed

Some devices that use DHCP Option 235 to discover Microsoft Connected Cache nodes may fail to use those nodes and download updates and apps from the public internet instead. That can increase traffic over an organization’s internet connection. Microsoft says this enterprise-oriented configuration issue is unlikely to affect home users and identifies KB5040525 as the update that addresses it.

Changing an account picture may return error 0x80070520

A user may encounter error 0x80070520 when changing an account picture through Settings. Microsoft says the issue has very limited or no impact for this Windows version and directs affected users to Windows support.

VPN connections may fail

Windows devices might experience VPN connection failures after installing the April 9, 2024 update or a later update. Microsoft identifies KB5037768 as addressing the issue. The documentation does not say that every VPN connection fails or provide a prevalence estimate.

Microsoft lists these issues and named mitigations in its KB5036892 support notes.

No. Microsoft marks KB5036892 as expired: as of March 31, 2026, it is no longer available from the Microsoft Update Catalog or other Microsoft release channels. The dated update and its build numbers remain useful for identifying what was installed, but the original package cannot now be obtained from those channels.
