Xbox says its next-generation console, Project Helix, is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games,” but that broad goal does not confirm support for any particular Xbox One, Xbox 360, or original Xbox game, disc, controller, or accessory. Xbox has not published a Helix-specific compatibility list in its announcement, so check the official game and accessory policies before assuming something you own will carry over.
What Xbox has confirmed about Project Helix
In its March 11, 2026 announcement, Xbox described Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console and said it is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games.” The announcement does not identify supported Xbox generations or individual titles. It also does not confirm whether Helix will play physical discs, carry over digital game entitlements, or support existing peripherals.
That wording signals broad compatibility intent, not a guarantee that every current Xbox game or accessory will work. Until Xbox publishes details, there is no reliable way to answer whether a specific title or device will be compatible.
What works on Xbox Series X|S today
Xbox’s backward-compatible games catalog lists most Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles as playable on Series X|S. You can filter the catalog by generation and check its excluded-games list. Support and features vary by title. Xbox says more than 500,000 hours of testing went into backward-compatible gameplay and quality standards for Series X|S; that figure is not a Project Helix test or a count of supported games.

Digital games
If you own a digital game that is included in the supported catalog, it appears in the console’s “Ready to Install” area. Xbox says backward compatibility on Series X|S is free for games you already own and that are in its supported catalog. This is the current Series X|S policy; Xbox has not announced Project Helix entitlement or pricing rules.
Physical discs
On Xbox Series X, insert a qualifying game disc to begin downloading the game. The disc must remain in the drive to play. Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot play physical discs. Downloads are required, and features vary by game. These are Series X|S instructions, not confirmation that Project Helix will include a disc drive or use the same disc policy.

Enhancements and legacy limitations
For selected backward-compatible games, Series X|S offers enhancements such as resolution increases up to 4K, Auto HDR for certain older SDR games, and FPS Boost. Availability varies by title and console; these features are not universal and have not been confirmed for Project Helix.
Xbox’s backward-compatibility FAQ also describes limits for original Xbox games on Series X|S: original Xbox Live online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable, though offline multiplayer is supported where the original game allowed it. Those games do not gain Xbox achievements, and their saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Series X|S. Saves created on Xbox One or Series X|S can move between those consoles through the cloud.

Will your Xbox One controller or other accessories work?
Xbox has not confirmed whether Xbox One or Series X|S controllers, headsets, racing wheels, storage devices, or licensed third-party products will work with Project Helix. A familiar connector or Xbox branding alone does not establish compatibility: connection method, licensing, and device-specific features can affect support.
There is a precedent, but it applies to the current generation. In its March 16, 2020 controller announcement, Xbox said it was supporting cross-compatibility between Xbox Series X and Xbox One consoles and controllers. Its Series X|S technology glossary also promised that Xbox One gaming accessories would work with Series X and Series S. Neither statement names Project Helix.

What to check before relying on a game or accessory
For now, treat Project Helix compatibility as unconfirmed for individual items. When Xbox publishes its official support information, check these details rather than relying on the product category alone:
- Game: the exact title and its generation—Xbox One, Xbox 360, or original Xbox.
- Ownership: whether support covers a digital license, a physical disc, or both.
- Console hardware: whether the relevant Helix configuration has an optical drive if you rely on discs.
- Accessory: connection method, official Xbox licensing, and whether all features or only basic operation are supported.
Until those Helix-specific details are available, do not buy a replacement or new accessory on the assumption that it will work with the next Xbox.
