There is no reliable way to tell whether AI will replace your specific job. Current evidence points more often to jobs changing as AI takes on or assists with some tasks than to whole occupations disappearing. Whether that changes staffing depends on how employers adopt the technology, how work is organized, demand for the work, and local conditions.
Will AI replace my job?
Possibly, but broad estimates cannot predict what will happen to one worker. They measure whether AI could affect tasks associated with an occupation—not whether an employer will adopt it, eliminate a position, or reduce overall employment.
The International Labour Organization (ILO) reported in 2025 that one in four workers worldwide are in occupations with some degree of generative-AI exposure. It concluded that most jobs are more likely to be transformed than made redundant. In the ILO’s highest exposure gradient, however, are 3.3% of global employment. That is still an exposure estimate, not the share of workers certain to lose their jobs. Read the ILO’s 2025 update and its working paper on occupational exposure.
As ILO Senior Researcher Paweł Gmyrek put it, “The picture that emerges is one of job transformation, not a ‘job apocalypse.’” The point is not that no jobs will be lost; it is that exposure alone does not establish whether an individual role will be eliminated or how total employment will change. What does “AI exposure” actually mean?
Exposure estimates whether AI could perform or assist with some tasks in an occupation. A high score does not show that those tasks are being automated in a particular workplace, that the remaining work can be reorganized economically, or that the employer will cut jobs.
The ILO’s 2025 ILO–NASK index assesses occupational tasks and assigns exposure to four gradients. Its framework drew on a representative sample of tasks from Poland’s occupational classification, worker input, and expert discussions, then applied the framework to global employment data. Its estimates describe occupations and populations, not an individual job-risk score.

For the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) groups occupations by relative theoretical and observed AI exposure. BLS says these categories are supplemental information, not employment projections. Its 2025–35 projection cycle, released on August 27, 2026, does not treat higher exposure as proof that an occupation’s demand will decline or that its work is expected to be automated. These measures should not be compared as if they used one scale: the ILO provides global generative-AI exposure gradients, while BLS describes relative exposure categories for U.S. occupations using theoretical and observed measures.

Which jobs are most exposed to AI?
Some work profiles are more exposed because they include tasks that are digital, repeatable, or heavily based on processing and producing information. The ILO continues to identify clerical occupations as among the most exposed. Its examples include data-entry clerks, typists, accounting and bookkeeping clerks, and administrative secretaries.
Exposure is not limited to clerical work. The ILO also reports increased exposure for some professional and technical roles, including financial analysts, web and multimedia developers, application programmers, and investment advisers. BLS lists web developers, customer service representatives, and personal financial advisors among U.S. occupations in its very-high exposure category. Those labels indicate relative exposure, not a forecast that these occupations will shrink.

Do forecasts say AI will eliminate more jobs than it creates?
No single headline number answers that question for AI alone. The World Economic Forum’s 2025 report projects 170 million jobs created and 92 million displaced by 2030, a net increase of 78 million. These are employer expectations across several global trends, not AI-only estimates or guaranteed outcomes for a particular country, occupation, or worker. The WEF also reported that 77% of surveyed employers plan to upskill workers; this is an intention, not a measure of training already completed. Read the WEF report announcement.

Start with your tasks, not just your job title. Two people with the same title may spend their time differently, and an occupation-level estimate cannot capture your employer’s plans, customer needs, or local labor market.

- List your recurring tasks. Include the work you do regularly, not just the responsibilities in your job description.
- Mark tasks that are routine and digital. Examples might include processing standard documents or entering structured information. These may be easier for AI to assist with, but that does not mean they will be automated at your workplace.
- Identify work that depends on context or accountability. Note where decisions require understanding a specific situation, taking responsibility for an outcome, or handling exceptions.
- Identify work that relies on people or physical presence. Consider interpersonal trust, complex judgment, hands-on tasks, and conditions that cannot be handled solely through digital information.
- Check evidence relevant to your location and occupation. Use occupation-specific and local employment information; broad global estimates or U.S. exposure categories cannot settle the outlook for your employer.
What skills should I build if AI changes my work?
Adaptability is more useful than assuming every worker needs an AI-specialist credential. The OECD’s 2024 analysis says most workers exposed to AI will not need specialized AI skills, even though their tasks and required skills may change. It identifies management and business skills among those most demanded in highly exposed occupations. See the OECD analysis of changing skill demand.
Choose learning based on the work you actually do: understanding how AI tools can support relevant tasks, checking their outputs, or strengthening the domain, communication, management, and data skills your role requires may be more relevant than pursuing a generic credential. Neither a course nor a single skill guarantees job security, and paid training is not a prerequisite for making a plan.
