First check whether your Mac’s Wi-Fi service is missing or whether its control is present but refuses to turn on. If the service is missing, add it in Network settings; if Wi-Fi is enabled but you cannot get online, troubleshoot the connection instead. Apple’s documented steps do not identify a guaranteed fix for a visible Wi-Fi control that will not enable.
Check whether Wi-Fi is available to turn on
Apple’s Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar includes an on/off control. If you can see it, open the menu and choose the option to turn Wi-Fi on. If the menu is hidden, you can access Wi-Fi through Control Centre or show its status menu using the controls in Apple menu > System Settings > Menu Bar. Menu labels can vary by macOS version. Apple’s Wi-Fi status menu guide covers the menu-bar control.
If Wi-Fi is missing from Network settings
A Mac with wireless capability can lack a configured Wi-Fi service. Apple’s documented remedy is to add that service:
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Network.
- Choose Add Service from the Action menu.
- Select Wi-Fi as the interface, enter a service name, and click Create.
These steps apply when the Wi-Fi service is absent from Network settings, rather than when the service is listed but its control will not turn on. See Apple’s instructions for setting up a network service.

If the Wi-Fi control is present but will not turn on
Try the menu-bar and System Settings checks above. Apple’s reviewed guidance does not specify a complete or guaranteed remedy for a visible Wi-Fi control that refuses to enable. If it remains unavailable, contact Apple Support or a qualified repair provider for diagnosis; the symptom alone does not establish that the Mac’s wireless hardware has failed.
If Wi-Fi turns on but the Mac cannot get online
This is a connection problem, not the same as Wi-Fi being unable to turn on. Apple’s internet-connection checklist recommends checking the Mac and the network:

- Restart the Mac.
- If you can connect to another network, update macOS.
- Check whether a VPN or other security software that interacts with network connections is affecting access.
- Restart the router and check its firmware and settings.
- Try a different Wi-Fi network. If another network works, ask the administrator of the original network or your internet service provider to investigate.

Wireless Diagnostics is for a Mac that can connect to its Wi-Fi router but has trouble loading websites, email, or streaming. It reports detected issues and possible solutions without changing network settings. Apple states: “Wireless Diagnostics doesn’t change your network settings.” It is not the first step when Wi-Fi cannot be enabled at all. See Apple’s Wireless Diagnostics guide.
