Wi-Fi 7 is the current, throughput-focused generation; Wi-Fi 8 is still in development and is being designed to make wireless connections more consistent in difficult conditions. Wi-Fi 7 offers features such as 320 MHz channels, 4K QAM and Multi-Link Operation (MLO). Wi-Fi 8’s proposed emphasis is reliability at coverage edges, in busy networks and when devices move between access points—not a guaranteed jump in household internet speed. To benefit from either generation, both the router and the connected device need compatible hardware.

Where Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 8 stand

Wi-Fi 7 is based on IEEE 802.11be-2024. Wi-Fi 8 is the industry name associated with the IEEE 802.11bn project, whose stated direction is Ultra High Reliability (UHR). Qualcomm describes it as the next-generation wireless standard under development through that project; this is a vendor explanation, not an official IEEE quotation. Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi 8 overview explains the term and proposed goals.

As of October 4, 2026, 802.11bn remains in standards development. The initial working-group ballot for draft D2.0 closed on September 2, 2026, with 76.5% approval. IEEE’s project timeline lists predicted milestones extending through 2028, so draft details and dates are not final guarantees. See the IEEE 802.11 timeline and IEEE project information.

Qualcomm has said final IEEE approval is expected in 2028 and Wi-Fi Alliance certification is projected for January 2028. In a March 2026 announcement, it said its Wi-Fi 8 platforms were sampling to customers and commercial products were expected in late 2026. Platform sampling is not the same as a certified consumer router being available to buy: check the status and specifications of a particular product rather than treating those dates as a retail guarantee. Qualcomm’s March 2026 announcement describes its own platforms and expectations.

What changes between Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 8

Area Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn direction)
Design emphasis Very high throughput and low latency More consistent throughput, latency and connection behavior in difficult conditions
Features highlighted in vendor materials Up to 320 MHz channel width, 4K QAM and Multi-Link Operation (MLO) Enhanced Long Range, improved error correction, unequal modulation, multi-access-point coordination, roaming and handoff improvements, spectrum-use mechanisms, and in-device coexistence
Potentially noticeable use cases High-capacity local connections when compatible clients, router and available spectrum align Coverage edges, dense networks, roaming and connection reliability or responsiveness
Status Standard published as IEEE 802.11be-2024 Draft project; features and product implementations may change

These feature descriptions come from Qualcomm and Broadcom vendor materials. They describe design direction, not independent product testing or a promise that every Wi-Fi 8 device will implement each proposed feature in the same way.

Wi-Fi 7: more capacity when conditions support it

Wi-Fi 7’s headline features target faster, higher-capacity links. A 320 MHz channel can provide a wider lane for data where the router and client support it and suitable spectrum is available. 4K QAM can encode more data under favorable signal conditions. MLO lets compatible devices use multiple bands or links. None of these specifications guarantees a particular internet speed: the result also depends on client capability, signal quality, interference, router configuration and the internet connection itself.

Wi-Fi 8: steadier behavior in challenging conditions

The proposed Wi-Fi 8 feature set points toward keeping connections useful when conditions are less ideal: farther from an access point, in a crowded wireless environment, or while moving between access points. Coordination among multiple access points and roaming improvements may matter especially in a multi-access-point or mesh network. The aim is consistency and responsiveness, not simply a larger peak-speed number.

That distinction is a design goal, not yet a proven household outcome. The cited vendor materials do not establish a universal Wi-Fi 7-versus-Wi-Fi 8 router benchmark, and draft features should not be converted into a promised speed increase.

What you need to benefit

Compatible hardware at both ends

A new router alone cannot make an existing phone, laptop or other client use Wi-Fi 8 features. The client also needs compatible Wi-Fi 8 hardware. Qualcomm says Wi-Fi 8 is intended to remain backward-compatible with Wi-Fi 7 and earlier generations, so older devices are expected to stay usable; they will connect according to their own capabilities, not gain the new generation’s features simply because the router supports them.

A problem the new generation addresses

Before buying, identify whether the issue is weak coverage, congestion, roaming between access points, inconsistent latency or a slow internet service. A newer Wi-Fi generation is not a fix for every cause: for example, a slow ISP connection can remain the limiting factor even when the local wireless link is capable of more.

  • Weak coverage: consider access-point placement or whether a multi-access-point layout is more suitable than one router.
  • Congestion or limited local capacity: Wi-Fi 7 may be relevant if both router and frequently used clients support its features.
  • Roaming or reliability across a larger space: Wi-Fi 8’s proposed direction may be relevant, but wait for finished products and independent evaluations before relying on that benefit.
  • Slow internet service: check the ISP connection and plan as well as the wireless network.
  • Latency consistency: distinguish stable performance under load or at range from a peak speed measured in ideal conditions.

Should you buy Wi-Fi 7 now or wait for Wi-Fi 8?

Consider Wi-Fi 7 if you need a replacement now

If your router is failing or inadequate, Wi-Fi 7 is a current product category to consider. The case is strongest when you have compatible Wi-Fi 7 clients and a real need for the throughput or latency features. Compare the actual router’s capabilities and your network layout; the generation label alone does not establish coverage, performance or value for your home.

Wait if your current network works and you want Wi-Fi 8’s intended strengths

If your existing network meets your needs, waiting lets you assess actual Wi-Fi 8 consumer products, certification status and independent reviews. This is particularly sensible if your reason to upgrade is better performance at range, in a dense environment or across multiple access points. The standard is still a draft project as of October 4, 2026, and announced platform sampling does not by itself establish consumer-router availability.
