For most people choosing between otherwise similar laptops, Wi‑Fi 6E is enough to get access to 6 GHz Wi‑Fi. Choose Wi‑Fi 7 if its price premium is reasonable and you have—or plan to buy—a compatible Wi‑Fi 7 router and supported software. Wi‑Fi 7 adds features such as 320 MHz channels and Multi-Link Operation (MLO), but those capabilities do not guarantee faster results on a particular laptop.
What is the difference between Wi‑Fi 6E and Wi‑Fi 7?
Wi‑Fi 6E extends Wi‑Fi 6 into the 6 GHz band. Wi‑Fi 7 builds on that band support and adds wider channel and modulation capabilities, as well as MLO. Intel’s comparison lists support for 2.4 and 5 GHz on Wi‑Fi 6, and 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz on its Wi‑Fi 6E and Wi‑Fi 7 products. It lists maximum channel bandwidths of 160 MHz for Wi‑Fi 6E and 320 MHz for Wi‑Fi 7, and 1024-QAM versus 4096-QAM, respectively. These are capability specifications, not measured laptop speeds. See Intel’s Wi‑Fi generation comparison.
| Feature | Wi‑Fi 6E | Wi‑Fi 7 |
|---|---|---|
| Bands listed by Intel | 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz | 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz |
| Maximum channel bandwidth in Intel’s comparison | 160 MHz | 320 MHz |
| Modulation listed in Intel’s comparison | 1024-QAM | 4096-QAM |
| Multi-Link Operation | Not listed as a Wi‑Fi 6E feature in the cited comparison | Supported as a Wi‑Fi 7 capability; use depends on compatible hardware and software |
What MLO is meant to do
MLO can let a device use multiple bands or links at the same time. Microsoft describes it as a way to help avoid congestion and maintain connectivity; the Wi‑Fi Alliance says the feature is intended to increase throughput, reduce latency, and improve reliability. Those are intended benefits, not guaranteed outcomes. The laptop adapter, router implementation, supported bands, software, and network conditions all affect what happens in practice. See Microsoft’s explanation of Windows Wi‑Fi features and the Wi‑Fi Alliance Wi‑Fi CERTIFIED 7 announcement.
What do you need to use 6 GHz or Wi‑Fi 7?
A laptop’s general model name may cover several wireless configurations, so check the exact SKU or configuration rather than assuming every version has the same adapter. To use 6 GHz, Intel says you need a compatible Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7 router, Windows 11, and current wireless drivers on its supported products. Intel specifies a Wi‑Fi 7 router and Windows 11 version 24H2 or later for Wi‑Fi 7 functionality on its products. Requirements can differ by adapter and manufacturer; consult the laptop maker’s specifications as well as Intel’s 6 GHz and Wi‑Fi 7 requirements.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Laptop: Confirm the specific configuration includes a Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7 adapter.
- Router: A Wi‑Fi 6E router can provide 6 GHz access for a compatible Wi‑Fi 6E laptop. A Wi‑Fi 7 router is required for Wi‑Fi 7 functionality on supported Intel systems. An existing Wi‑Fi 6E router does not enable Wi‑Fi 7 features.
- Operating system and drivers: Check the adapter and laptop manufacturer’s software requirements. Intel specifies Windows 11 and current wireless drivers for 6 GHz access, and Windows 11 24H2 or later for Wi‑Fi 7 functionality on its products.
- Location and laptop configuration: Some countries do not permit 6 GHz use, and laptop manufacturers may not enable it on every platform or in every market. Verify local availability and the exact SKU.
If you already own a Wi‑Fi 6E router, you do not need to replace it simply to use 6 GHz with a Wi‑Fi 6E laptop. Consider a Wi‑Fi 7 router only if you want Wi‑Fi 7 features and your laptop and software can use them.
Is Wi‑Fi 7 worth it in a laptop?
Compare the actual price difference between similarly equipped laptops, the router you use or plan to buy, 6 GHz availability where you live, and whether your software supports the features you want. The choice is mainly about compatibility and value—not a promise that a newer Wi‑Fi label will make every connection faster.

Choose Wi‑Fi 6E when
- Your main goal is access to 6 GHz and you have, or plan to get, a compatible Wi‑Fi 6E router.
- The Wi‑Fi 7 version costs more than you are willing to pay for its additional features.
- You do not have a Wi‑Fi 7 router and do not expect to upgrade to one.
Choose Wi‑Fi 7 when
- The price premium is modest for the laptop configuration you want.
- You have a Wi‑Fi 7 router, or intend to buy one, and your laptop’s operating system and drivers support the relevant features.
- You value the newer capabilities, such as wider channels and MLO, for a longer ownership period.
There is no comparable independent laptop benchmark in the cited material that establishes how much faster Wi‑Fi 7 laptops are than Wi‑Fi 6E laptops. For example, Intel’s BE211 product specification, launched in Q4 2025, lists a maximum rate of 5.8 Gbps for that adapter, alongside 2×2 streams, 320 MHz channels, 4096-QAM, and 2.4/5/6 GHz support. That is an adapter specification, not a measured laptop result, an expected internet speed, or a figure applicable to every Wi‑Fi 7 laptop. See Intel’s BE211 specification.
