Upgrading a TP-Link router from Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) to Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) mainly changes how efficiently it can serve multiple active devices. That can help on a busy network when the router and clients support the relevant features. It does not guarantee faster internet, extend coverage to every room, or make older devices use Wi-Fi 6.

What changes between Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6?

Wi-Fi 6 adds tools intended to manage traffic from multiple devices more efficiently. TP-Link describes Wi-Fi 5 as 802.11ac and Wi-Fi 6 as 802.11ax. The generation label alone, however, cannot predict the speed you will see at home.

  • OFDMA: A Wi-Fi 6 router can divide channel resources to serve multiple devices more efficiently. It is a traffic-management feature, not a promise that every device will receive full speed simultaneously.
  • MU-MIMO: Multi-user, multiple-input, multiple-output capabilities can help a router serve more than one device. The practical benefit depends on the router’s implementation and whether client devices support the relevant capabilities.
  • Target Wake Time (TWT): Wi-Fi 6 includes this feature, but any benefit depends on support in both the router and the client. It should not be taken as a guaranteed battery-life improvement for every connected device.

Wi-Fi 6 can operate on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, but routers do not all have identical band configurations. The standard also does not remove physical obstacles or other limits on signal coverage. TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 5 vs. Wi-Fi 6 comparison and its Wi-Fi 6 technical guide describe the features and note that real performance depends on the internet plan, device placement, and the number of connected devices.

What do the speed figures mean in practice?

TP-Link Editorial Group’s comparison, published June 4, 2026, lists theoretical maximums of approximately 3.5 Gbps for Wi-Fi 5 and 9.6 Gbps for Wi-Fi 6. These are manufacturer-stated theoretical ceilings, not typical home throughput or results from a comparative speed test. A router cannot deliver internet speeds beyond the service plan’s limits, and actual Wi-Fi performance also depends on placement, connected-device load, interference, router capacity, and client hardware.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

As a result, a Wi-Fi 6 upgrade is not a reliable way to promise a particular speed increase. Its more relevant potential advantage is handling a busy network more efficiently, provided the router and devices can use the features.

Will your existing devices work with a Wi-Fi 6 router?

Older Wi-Fi 5 devices can connect to a Wi-Fi 6 router, but they remain limited to the capabilities they support. They do not gain Wi-Fi 6-specific features simply because the router has them. Conversely, TP-Link says Wi-Fi 6 devices can connect to Wi-Fi 5 routers, but they operate at Wi-Fi 5 performance without Wi-Fi 6-specific features.

  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Before upgrading, list the devices that matter most—such as laptops, phones, TVs, and consoles—and check their wireless standards and feature support. A newer router is most useful when the devices creating the network load can take advantage of its capabilities.

Does Wi-Fi 6 mean better security with WPA3?

No. Wi-Fi 6 does not automatically mean that a particular router or all your devices support WPA3. WPA3 protection requires support from both the router and the client. Some compatible TP-Link routers may add support through a firmware update; check the exact model’s documentation and available settings rather than assuming support from its Wi-Fi generation. TP-Link’s WPA3 compatibility guidance also describes mixed WPA3/WPA2 modes for compatible products, which may be relevant when older devices remain in use.

Will replacing the router fix dead zones?

Not necessarily. If the main problem is a weak signal in a distant room or on another floor, changing from Wi-Fi 5 to Wi-Fi 6 alone may not solve it. Router placement, the home’s layout, and obstacles affect coverage. TP-Link identifies mesh as a possible way to address coverage in large or multistory homes; it is a coverage option, not a requirement for every Wi-Fi generation upgrade.

How to decide whether to upgrade

Your situation What to consider
Your network slows down when many devices are active Consider Wi-Fi 6 if your important clients support it and the router is a bottleneck. Its traffic-management features are intended to improve handling of multiple devices, but the result depends on equipment and workload.
Your Wi-Fi 5 router already handles your household’s workload Keeping it is reasonable if it performs well. A new standard name alone is not a reason to expect better service.
The signal is poor in distant rooms or on another floor Investigate router placement or mesh coverage before replacing equipment solely for Wi-Fi 6.
You are buying new equipment now Compare Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 options available in your market, but assess model features and prices. The generation comparison alone does not establish which is the better value.

Device-count thresholds sometimes offered as upgrade guidance are heuristics, not universal standards. Judge the decision by what happens in your home: which devices are active, what tasks are affected, and whether the current router—not the internet plan or coverage—is the limiting factor.

TP-Link checks to make before updating or replacing a router

  • Look up the exact router model and hardware version on TP-Link’s support portal to verify its features and compatibility.
  • If checking WPA3, confirm support for both the router and the clients you want to protect, and check whether a mixed-security mode is available for older devices.
  • Before installing firmware, identify the router’s hardware version and use firmware for the product’s purchase region. TP-Link warns that firmware files for different regions are not interchangeable; using the wrong file can damage the device or affect warranty coverage. Follow the model-specific instructions in its firmware upgrade guide.
