Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA Wi-Fi extender can lose its connection for several different reasons, and the extender itself may not be at fault. First find out what is dropping: the device’s Wi-Fi link to the extender, the extender’s link back to the router, or the router’s connection to the internet. Then work through firmware, placement, radio settings, and client-specific checks before considering a reset or replacement.
Find out what is disconnecting
A device can remain connected to the extender’s Wi-Fi network even after the extender has lost its wireless link to the router. Or the extender may be working while the router or internet service is down. TP-Link explains that “A range extender extends your Wi-Fi signal, but it does not maintain the Internet connection on its own.” TP-Link support describes the extender’s role; the exact troubleshooting steps and status indicators vary by model.
When the next dropout happens, check these three things before changing settings:
- The affected device: Does it still show a Wi-Fi connection to the extender, or has it disconnected from Wi-Fi entirely?
- The extender: Do its status lights or management app indicate that it has lost its connection to the router? Consult the model’s manual to interpret its indicators.
- Other devices: Do devices connected directly to the router still have internet? If they also fail, investigate the router or internet service first rather than assuming the extender is defective.
If possible, note the affected device’s IP address, default gateway, and DNS settings during the failure. Those details, along with whether other devices are affected, can help support staff distinguish a client configuration issue from a broader network problem.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Update firmware for the exact model
Check the manufacturer’s support page for the extender’s precise model and hardware revision, then follow its instructions to install the current firmware. An update may address a software fault, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Retest the connection afterward so you can tell whether the update changed the behavior.
Depending on which devices are affected, router firmware or a client device’s Wi-Fi driver may also be relevant. Update those using the instructions for their exact models or operating systems rather than installing firmware intended for a different revision. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guidance and ASUS support guidance cover vendor-specific checks.

Test the extender in a better position
An extender needs a usable signal from the router as well as a good position for reaching the area where coverage is needed. A weak connection between the router and extender can make the extended network unstable even when a device appears close to the extender.
- Temporarily move the extender closer to the router. If it becomes stable there, distance, obstacles, or a weak router-to-extender signal are plausible causes.
- Move it outward in stages toward the coverage target. Stop at a position where it still receives a usable signal from the router. A point roughly halfway between the router and the weak-coverage area can be a starting place, not a fixed rule.
- Compare the results. If the connection fails again as you move farther away, return to the nearest position that remains stable and adjust from there.
Walls and other barriers can weaken a wireless signal. NETGEAR warns that a borderline router signal can cause setup or connectivity problems, while TP-Link recommends placing the extender within the router’s wireless range. See the vendors’ placement guidance and NETGEAR support guidance for advice specific to their equipment.

Check the Wi-Fi bands and nearby interference
Radio conditions can differ by location and equipment. ASUS describes 2.4 GHz as generally longer-range and 5 GHz as potentially faster over shorter distances. The useful band depends on signal strength, obstacles, and which bands the router and extender support. Try moving the router or extender away from barriers and nearby electronics, then compare whether the connection becomes more stable.
Test band steering only if your setup uses it
Some routers automatically steer devices between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. TP-Link documents a particular scenario in which band steering can contribute to extender instability; it is not evidence that steering causes disconnections on every setup. If your router offers this feature, consult its manual and test disabling it with separate names for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. If the change does not help, restore the previous settings. The relevant vendor-specific instructions are in TP-Link support.

Check whether the problem affects one device or several
If just one phone, laptop, or other client disconnects while other devices remain online through the extender, start with that client. Toggle its Wi-Fi connection, check for an operating-system or Wi-Fi-driver update, and record its IP address, default gateway, and DNS settings when the problem occurs.
If several clients lose access at the same time, the extender’s connection to the router or the router itself becomes a stronger possibility, but that pattern is a diagnostic clue—not proof. Compare the extender’s status with the connection on devices attached directly to the router to narrow down where the failure begins.

Reset or replace the extender only after basic checks
A factory reset can erase the extender’s settings and require you to set it up again. Reserve it for a persistent problem after checking firmware, placement, and other likely causes. Before resetting, record the current configuration and follow the instructions for the exact model.
Consider replacement if the extender still fails when tested close to a stable router, with current firmware and a setup known to be compatible. A new unit will not fix an outage originating with the router or internet service.
What to check before choosing a replacement
- Router compatibility: Confirm support for your router’s configuration and security settings.
- Band support: Check that the extender supports the bands you intend to use.
- Mesh compatibility: If you use a mesh system, verify that the specific extender is compatible and understand how it extends that network. Google notes that compatibility with Google Wifi or Nest Wifi depends on the particular device and how it extends the network; see Google Nest support.
- Placement: Make sure the intended location can still receive a stable signal from the router.
A higher advertised speed or coverage figure does not by itself identify or fix the cause of a disconnection. Diagnose the failing link first, then compare suitable devices only if the extender itself remains the likely problem.
