If your Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 device cannot see a 6 GHz network, first confirm that the exact device and router both support 6 GHz and that the band is enabled and available in your region. On Windows, the adapter, operating system, and driver must also support it. A Wi-Fi 6 label by itself does not mean a device can use 6 GHz.

Check that both the device and router support 6 GHz

Wi-Fi 6 is not the same as Wi-Fi 6E

Wi-Fi 6 devices use the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Wi-Fi 6E adds 6 GHz support, and Wi-Fi 7 devices can also support 6 GHz. That distinction applies to the actual wireless adapter, not just the name of a laptop, phone, or router series. Check the manufacturer’s specification for your precise device or adapter. Intel’s explanation of the difference is in its Wi-Fi 6 versus Wi-Fi 6E/7 guidance.

The router must provide an enabled 6 GHz band

A 6E- or 7-capable device cannot discover a 6 GHz network if the router or access point does not support 6 GHz, or if that band is disabled. A router marked Wi-Fi 6 is not necessarily a Wi-Fi 6E router. Check the router’s specifications and management app or web interface for 6 GHz support and its band setting. Microsoft notes that a Wi-Fi 6E router and a compatible device are needed for 6 GHz Wi-Fi in its guide to Wi-Fi and your home layout.

Check operating-system and driver support

On Windows, support can depend on the exact wireless adapter, the Windows version, the installed driver, and whether the computer maker has enabled the feature for that system. Intel’s requirements apply to Intel products, not every Windows computer:

  • Intel Wi-Fi 6E products require Windows 11 and Intel driver version 22.70.0 or later, according to Intel.
  • Intel Wi-Fi 7 products require Windows 11 and Intel driver version 23.10.0 or later. Intel says Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and a Wi-Fi 7 router are needed for Wi-Fi 7 functionality.

These are Intel’s published requirements, not universal Windows thresholds. Identify the adapter in your computer and check the computer maker’s validated driver guidance as well as Intel’s 6 GHz enablement instructions. For a separately installed Intel card, Intel says system-maker validation and approval matter; a card’s capability alone does not guarantee that a particular computer platform enables 6 GHz.

Check regional availability and platform enablement

6 GHz Wi-Fi is subject to local regulation, and availability is not the same in every country. A device or operating system may also restrict the band based on its region or manufacturer configuration. Intel warns that some countries prohibit 6 GHz operation and that manufacturers may not enable it on a given platform. Apple likewise says 6 GHz features are not available in all regions. Do not change a country or regulatory setting to bypass local rules; check the device maker’s support information for your location.

Review Wi-Fi names and band settings

A router may use one network name (SSID) across its Wi-Fi bands or separate names for 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz. The right approach depends on what you are troubleshooting and on the device platform.

  • Apple devices: Apple recommends using one network name across 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz for best performance and compatibility. If the bands have different names, an Apple device may show limited-compatibility behavior and offer the corresponding 5 GHz network instead. See Apple’s guidance for Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 networks with Apple devices.
  • Identifying a band during troubleshooting: Microsoft suggests separate SSIDs when you need to tell which band a device is using. This can help with diagnosis, but renaming networks cannot make an unsupported adapter or router use 6 GHz. Follow the router maker’s instructions and your device platform’s recommendations.

Test near the router, then compare another compatible device

6 GHz can provide strong performance close to the router, but it has shorter range and weaker wall penetration than lower-frequency bands. Stand near the router and check the available networks again after confirming capability and settings. If another device known to support 6 GHz can see the network in the same location, the issue is more likely specific to the first device or its configuration; if neither can see it, review the router’s 6 GHz settings and regional availability. This comparison narrows the possibilities but does not prove a single cause.

If the network appears in the list but connection fails, that is a different problem from the network being absent. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide covers general connection checks. For a missing network, work through the client, router, platform, region, naming, and proximity checks above before replacing hardware.
