A Mac may not recognize a dock, display, or accessory because the Mac’s port, cable, adapter, power supply, or accessory approval setting does not support the connection you’re trying to make. Start by identifying your exact Mac and checking what its ports and display specifications support; then test the connection one link at a time. USB-C describes a connector shape, not a guarantee of Thunderbolt or video support.

Start by identifying the Mac and the failing connection

Before changing settings or replacing hardware, write down the Mac model and year or chip, macOS version, dock or adapter model, and the port used on the Mac. For a display problem, also note the monitor model, its input (such as HDMI or DisplayPort), and the cable type. Specify what fails: the whole dock, one USB device, Ethernet, or a display.

Check Apple’s model-specific display specifications if you are connecting multiple displays. Supported display count, resolution, and modes vary by Mac, so a dock cannot necessarily add display support beyond what the Mac itself allows. See Apple’s guide to connecting external displays.

Check that the Mac port and adapter support the connection

USB-C and Thunderbolt can use similar-looking connectors, but they are not interchangeable capabilities. Check the Mac’s specifications and any port markings to confirm whether the port supports USB, video, or Thunderbolt as needed. Apple notes that a Mac with only one port does not support Thunderbolt connections. Its adapter guidance covers adapters for Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, and USB-C Macs.

For an external display, the adapter must support a compatible video path: DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4. Match the adapter to both the Mac’s capabilities and the display’s input. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable may suit an HDMI display on a compatible Mac; a DisplayPort display needs the corresponding compatible adapter or cable. Check the product specifications for the required resolution and refresh rate rather than assuming every USB-C adapter carries video.

If a display is missing, check the display path

  1. Confirm the monitor is ready. Turn it on and select the input connected to the Mac or dock.
  2. Reseat the connection. Check both ends of the cable and make sure it is connected to the intended ports. If possible, verify that the cable and adapter support the display connection you need.
  3. Ask macOS to detect the display. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Hold Option to show Detect Displays, then select it.
  4. Reconnect and retry. Unplug and reconnect the display. If it remains absent, put the Mac to sleep and wake it, then check Displays again.
  5. Verify the Mac’s display limits. Confirm that the Mac supports the number and type of connected displays, and consult the display maker’s instructions for its input and setup.

Apple’s external-display instructions cover supported connections, detection, and reconnection.

If the accessory charges but is not recognized, check approval

On an Apple silicon Mac laptop, a new or unknown USB or Thunderbolt accessory may prompt for approval. Unlock the Mac if requested and choose Allow only if you trust the accessory. Choosing Don’t Allow can block accessory recognition and data access even though the accessory may still charge; Apple confirms that charging can continue after access is denied.

If you previously chose Don’t Allow, disconnecting and reconnecting the accessory may show the prompt again. To review the approval behavior, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessories. Apple lists options including Always ask, Ask for new accessories, Automatically allow when unlocked, and Always allow. Choose based on the security level you want; allowing accessories more broadly changes what can connect without a new approval. See Apple’s accessory connection guidance.

If macOS reports “USB Devices Disabled” or insufficient power

A power warning points to the device or hub’s power needs, not necessarily a defective dock. Disconnect and reconnect the device, try a different Mac port, and connect the device directly to the Mac to bypass the hub. If the hub is self-powered, connect its AC adapter. Apple gives these steps for “USB Devices Disabled”.

Direct connection is a diagnostic test: if the device works directly, the issue may lie somewhere in the hub, its power, or the connection chain. It does not by itself prove that the dock is defective.

If a USB peripheral or another dock port still fails

Check that the device is powered on, cables are secure, and any required external power, software, or firmware is installed. Remove intermediate devices and connect the failing accessory directly to the Mac. Then check Apple menu > System Information > Hardware to see whether macOS lists it. If it appears there but does not work as expected, follow the device maker’s instructions; reopening the relevant app or restarting the Mac may also help.

Apple’s guide to Mac ports covers external devices, connection chains, and general troubleshooting. A device not appearing in System Information is useful evidence that the connection is not being recognized, but it does not identify which part of the chain is responsible.

Handle Thunderbolt 2 and Mini DisplayPort connections separately

Thunderbolt 2 and Mini DisplayPort connectors can look alike, but they represent different technologies. Apple’s Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter is intended for a Mac with Thunderbolt 3 and a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 device. It does not work with a non-Thunderbolt USB-C port or with a DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort display. It also does not charge the Mac through Thunderbolt. See Apple’s adapter details.

What to check before replacing a dock or adapter

There is no universal dock fix: choose replacement hardware only after matching it to the connection that is failing. Compare the candidate’s specifications against:

  • Your exact Mac model and whether its host port is USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, 4, or 5, or another interface.
  • The Mac’s supported display count, resolution, and refresh rate, plus the display’s input.
  • The required video protocol and any adapter or cable needed between the Mac, dock, and display.
  • The data ports, speeds, Ethernet, storage, card, and audio connections you need, and the number of devices to attach.
  • Power delivery for the Mac and power requirements for peripherals, including whether a hub needs its own AC supply.
  • Vendor compatibility notes and any required driver or firmware.

A more expensive dock cannot override the Mac’s native display limits or correct an unsuitable cable, missing power, blocked accessory approval, or software issue. Apple’s adapter examples include USB-C-to-HDMI connections, but compatibility still depends on the Mac’s video-capable port, the display input, and the adapter’s specifications.
