If your soundbar is silent, start by checking power, playback, mute, volume, and the selected input. Then check that the TV is sending audio through the connection you actually use—HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, or Bluetooth. If the soundbar also stays silent with another source and a known-good connection, contact its manufacturer for service rather than replacing it without isolating the fault.

Why is my soundbar not making any sound?

Silence can come from a paused source, muted or low volume, the wrong soundbar input, a TV audio-output setting, a loose or faulty cable, or a compatibility issue. Work through the checks below in order; the exact menu names and features vary by TV and soundbar model.

Check the simple causes first

  1. Confirm power and playback. Make sure the TV or source device and the soundbar are on, and that the program, video, or music is actively playing rather than paused.
  2. Check mute and volume on every device. Check the TV, soundbar, and any connected set-top box or streaming device. Raise the volume on the soundbar as well as the TV or source.
  3. Select the soundbar input that matches the connection. Use its source or function control to choose the HDMI, optical, Bluetooth, or other input you are using. Allow a few seconds after switching; Samsung notes that sound may take 4–5 seconds to start on its models. Samsung’s soundbar troubleshooting guide provides that model-specific note.
  4. Check whether the TV’s own speakers work. If they are also silent, investigate the TV or playback source before assuming the soundbar is at fault.

Set the TV’s sound output to the soundbar

If the TV plays audio through its own speakers but not through the soundbar, open the TV’s sound or speaker settings and select the external output that matches your connection: HDMI ARC/eARC, optical/digital audio, or Bluetooth. Menu wording and paths differ by manufacturer and model, so use the TV’s manual for the exact steps.

For example, Samsung’s U.S. guidance refers to Speaker Select or Speaker Settings. LG’s U.S. guidance says to select Optical Digital or HDMI for wired speakers and Bluetooth for wireless ones. These labels are examples, not universal menu names. Samsung support · LG support

Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
  • Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
  • 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
  • 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

Follow the connection you use

HDMI ARC or eARC

  • Connect the cable to the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC and the matching ARC/eARC port on the soundbar. A regular HDMI port may not provide the audio return connection.
  • Enable HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC in the TV settings. CEC may have a brand-specific name; Samsung calls it Anynet+.
  • Select the soundbar’s TV/ARC input, or the corresponding source specified in its manual. Some models use a label such as D-IN.
  • If the TV does not detect the soundbar, reseat both ends of the cable and try another known-good HDMI cable. Confirm that both devices support the ARC/eARC feature you intend to use.

ARC/eARC depends on compatible features at both ends. Sony’s U.S. support guidance says that if only one device supports ARC/eARC, the feature cannot be activated; optical or another audio connection may be an alternative. Check both devices’ manuals for supported audio formats and control features rather than assuming every setup handles them the same way. Sony’s ARC/eARC guidance

Optical audio

  • Make sure the cable is firmly connected to the TV’s digital audio output and the soundbar’s optical input.
  • Set the TV’s audio output to Optical Digital or Digital Audio Out, as named in its menu, and select Optical or D-IN on the soundbar.
  • If the connection still fails, try a known-good optical cable to check whether the cable is the problem.

Bluetooth or another wireless connection

  • Set the TV or source to send audio to the soundbar over the wireless connection you are using, and confirm the devices show as paired or connected.
  • If the soundbar does not appear in the TV’s device list, restart pairing using the instructions for your specific models. Pairing steps vary.

A source connected directly to the soundbar

For a streaming box, console, or other device plugged into the soundbar, confirm that the source is on and playing, then select the matching HDMI, AUX, Bluetooth, or other input on the soundbar. Check the cable and try another device on the same soundbar port if one is available.

Test the source, cable, and soundbar separately

  1. Test the TV or source without the soundbar. Disconnect the soundbar and play the same content through the TV’s own speakers. If that fails, troubleshoot the TV or source first.
  2. Try another source on the soundbar. Connect another device using the same soundbar input and cable. If it works, the original source, TV, or its settings are more likely to be involved.
  3. Swap one connection component at a time. Where supported, try a known-good cable or another compatible port. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to identify whether the problem follows the source, cable, port, or soundbar. A replacement cable is worth considering only if testing points to a cable fault.
  4. For an ARC problem, test another ARC-capable TV if available. Samsung recommends this as a way to help distinguish a TV-side issue from a soundbar-side issue.

Samsung’s general guidance is to check that connected devices are on, the soundbar is set to the correct source, and the cable is properly connected. Samsung support

When to contact the manufacturer

If the soundbar remains silent after the input, output settings, and connections are checked—and it produces no sound from multiple sources or devices—contact the soundbar manufacturer for model-specific service guidance. Menu options, supported audio formats, and reset procedures vary, so consult the manual before attempting a factory reset or a button combination intended for another model. Do not replace the soundbar until testing has helped isolate it as the failing component.
