Your smart TV can feel slower than your phone because it may have a weaker Wi-Fi signal, connect on a different band, support older wireless hardware, or share bandwidth with other devices. First make sure the comparison is fair: test both on the same home Wi-Fi, with the phone’s cellular data turned off. Then use the checks below to find whether the problem is Wi-Fi, the TV, an app, or your internet service.
Make sure the phone and TV are being compared fairly
A phone can silently switch to cellular data, making it seem much faster than the TV. Stand beside the TV, turn off the phone’s cellular data, and confirm it is connected to the same home Wi-Fi network. In a mesh or dual-band setup, the phone and TV may be using different access points or Wi-Fi bands, so their results may not reflect the same conditions.
Compare the TV’s network status or built-in connection test, if available, with what happens on the phone. Streaming playback is not a direct speed measurement: buffering or slow loading can also come from an app, service, or the TV itself.
Why the TV may be slower
The TV is farther from the router or blocked
Distance and obstacles—including walls, furniture, cabinets, and metal objects—can weaken the Wi-Fi signal. A TV tucked into a cabinet or placed far from the router may have a less reliable connection than a phone being used elsewhere. Test signal conditions at the TV’s actual location; temporarily moving the router or TV can help reveal whether placement is contributing. The TV uses a different Wi-Fi band or has limited Wi-Fi support
Wi-Fi band choice involves a range-versus-speed trade-off: 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther, while 5 GHz often supports higher speeds over shorter distances. The TV must support the band to use it. Support varies by model; Samsung, for example, lists some 2018 TV series that support only 2.4 GHz. If your TV cannot see a 5 GHz network, check its specifications rather than assuming the TV or router is faulty. Samsung’s support page provides model-specific guidance.
Other devices are using the connection
Wi-Fi capacity is shared. Google puts it plainly: “Whenever a device connects to your Wi-Fi network, it competes with other devices for bandwidth (internet speed).” Pause large downloads, uploads, game updates, and other heavy activity, then check the TV again. The quote comes from Google Nest Help’s slow-internet troubleshooting page.

The issue is with the TV, app, or internet service—not Wi-Fi speed alone
If only one TV app loads slowly, try another app before changing router settings or buying equipment. Restart or update the affected app and check whether TV software is current. If multiple devices are slow on the same Wi-Fi, the cause may be the router, internet service, or an outage rather than the TV.
Troubleshoot in this order
- Check whether other devices are slow. Test a phone on the same home Wi-Fi. If it is also slow, restart the modem and router. If the problem continues, check for an outage or contact your internet service provider (ISP).
- Repeat a fair comparison. Stand beside the TV, switch off cellular data on the phone, and confirm both devices use the same home network. If you have a mesh system or separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, note which access point or band each device uses.
- Check the TV’s network status and placement. Look for its connection status or signal indicator in the network settings. Menu labels differ by brand, model year, and software version; consult the TV manual or its model-specific support page if the directions do not match. Temporarily adjust placement or remove avoidable obstacles and test again.
- Test supported bands separately. If the TV supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, connect to each in turn and compare how it performs at the TV’s normal location. Do not infer a fault just because a TV that supports only 2.4 GHz cannot join a 5 GHz network.
- Pause heavy network use. Stop large downloads, uploads, and game updates on other devices, then retest the TV. This helps determine whether shared activity is affecting playback.
- Try another TV app. If just one app is affected, restart or update it and check for a TV software update before changing network hardware.
- Try a phone hotspot briefly, if practical. This can help distinguish a problem with the home network from one specific to the TV’s wireless connection. Hotspot availability and data charges depend on your carrier and plan; avoid extended streaming if mobile data is limited.
- Test Ethernet if the TV has a LAN port. Connect the TV to the router with an Ethernet cable and compare performance. If wired works while Wi-Fi does not, investigate signal strength, band support, router settings, or interference. A wired connection can be more stable, but it cannot exceed the slowest port or other component in the path.
- Check the internet service if several devices remain slow. Run the ISP’s or router maker’s recommended service test near the router. Contact the ISP if performance remains below the service you subscribe to or an outage is reported. Google’s slow-internet guide and Samsung’s TV Wi-Fi guidance offer additional troubleshooting steps.
When a cable or Wi-Fi extender might help
Ethernet cable
A cable is worth considering when the TV has an Ethernet/LAN port and you can run a cable to the router. Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 for Ethernet speeds above 100 Mbps, but a faster-rated cable will not overcome a slower TV port, router port, or other component in the connection. Check the TV’s port and the route before buying; see Google Nest’s Ethernet guidance.

- WIFI EXTENDERS SIGNAL BOOSTER FOR HOME: Extend high-performance WiFi with RE500X featuring high-gain antennas that are specifically designed to eliminate WiFi dead zones.
- DUAL-BAND WI-FI EXTENDER WITH 1.5 GBPS TOTAL BANDWIDTH: Extend your router's WiFi coverage with speeds up to 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- DOES NOT INCREASE SPEEDS: Please note that all Wireless Extenders are designed to improve WiFi coverage and not increase speeds. Actual speeds will be 50% or less from current speeds. However, improving signal reliability can boost overall performance.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES TO YOUR NETWORK: Connect more devices that are out of range from your main router while eliminating poor performance and weak WiFi.
- WIFI EXTENDER WITH GIGABIT ETHERNET PORT: Experience wired speed and reliability anywhere in your home by connecting your favorite device to the gigabit ethernet port.
Repeater or mesh point
Consider an added Wi-Fi point only after a placement check indicates weak coverage where the TV sits. Confirm compatibility with your router and place the point where it can itself receive a usable signal. A repeater or mesh point is not a guaranteed speed boost, and it will not solve a slow ISP connection, an app-specific problem, limited TV Wi-Fi support, or congestion from other network activity. There is no single official speed comparison that applies to smart TVs and phones across models and networks. TV Wi-Fi specifications vary, and a phone may use a different band, access point, or cellular connection. Streaming thresholds also depend on the service and video quality. Treat the comparison as a troubleshooting clue: control the connection conditions, then isolate whether the difference follows the TV, the Wi-Fi signal, an app, or the internet service.
