To troubleshoot, compare ping to the same destination with the VPN on and off; if you need the VPN, try another endpoint and check whether Wi-Fi or the game server is contributing. There is no universal number of milliseconds that a VPN adds.
Why a VPN can raise ping
Ping is the round-trip time for data to travel to a particular destination and for a response to return. With a VPN, the route typically includes an extra stop: your device sends encrypted traffic to the VPN server, which forwards it to the game or service. The response travels back through the VPN as well.
If the VPN server is far away or the route is inefficient, traffic can take a detour before reaching a destination that may be relatively close. Cloudflare calls this the “trombone effect”. A VPN server under heavy demand can also become a bottleneck, and encryption and decryption require processing. The size of any effect depends on the route, server, VPN implementation, and equipment; the available guidance does not establish a universal ping increase.
How to check whether the VPN is responsible
- Use the same destination. Compare ping to the same game server or service with the VPN on and off. Keep the game region and other network conditions as steady as you can. A ping to a different server is not a fair comparison because the destination itself affects the result. Cloudflare explains that latency is destination-specific in its latency overview.
- Compare the results, not just download speed. A faster download connection does not necessarily mean a shorter or more stable route to the game server. Ping to that destination is the more relevant measure for this problem.
What to try to reduce VPN-related ping
Test without the VPN when that is appropriate
If you do not need the VPN for the activity, test the game or service without it. Riot Games Support advises players not to use a VPN or proxy to connect to its game servers because they can cause connection issues. That guidance is specific to Riot’s game-server connections, not a universal rule for every game or VPN. Keep the VPN enabled if your privacy, access, or work requirements call for it.

Try a different VPN endpoint
If you need the VPN, test an endpoint near you or near the game server, then check ping to the same destination again. A closer endpoint may reduce a detour, but geographic distance alone does not prove that a route will be fastest. Cloudflare describes how routing and distance can add latency in its latency explanation; use the measured game ping to judge the result.
Test Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi
Wireless interference or instability can contribute to lag spikes and packet loss. Riot’s troubleshooting guidance recommends wired Ethernet, and EA says Ethernet usually provides a more stable connection. Trying an Ethernet cable can help determine whether the local Wi-Fi link is a factor; it will not shorten the route between your device, the VPN server, and the game server.

Check the game server and other network load
The game server’s location affects ping independently of the VPN. Steam’s guidance recommends considering both server latency and geographic distance when choosing a game server. Also check whether other activity on your home network is using capacity; Bungie recommends reducing network workload as part of connection troubleshooting.
Check for routing conflicts on managed devices
On a work-managed device, a VPN client and another networking client may both try to control routing, DNS, or firewall rules. Cloudflare warns that its client and a legacy VPN can conflict unless those responsibilities are separated. If the issue is on a managed device, ask the administrator to check the approved configuration rather than changing those settings yourself.

Can a VPN ever improve speed?
In a particular case, a VPN may improve speed if an internet provider is throttling identifiable traffic: encryption may prevent the provider from identifying the service. Cloudflare describes this as a conditional possibility, not a general way to lower gaming ping. The effect depends on the provider and route, so measure the same destination with and without the VPN rather than assuming encryption will help.
