What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your PC won’t start after a RAM change, first determine whether it has no power, powers on without displaying an image, fails its startup checks (POST), or reaches POST but cannot load the operating system. Then give memory training time, reseat the modules in the slots specified by your motherboard manual, and test one module at a time. Avoid changing several things at once: the pattern of results helps distinguish a seating or configuration problem from a faulty component.
First, identify where startup stops
“Won’t boot” can describe different failures, and the distinction affects what to check next. Note whether fans or lights come on, whether the monitor shows anything, whether the system completes POST, and whether it reaches the operating system. Record any diagnostic LEDs, beep patterns, or codes; their meaning depends on the motherboard, so check its manual. AMD separates no power, no display, and no boot; its “no boot” category can include a POST failure or a failure after POST.
- No power: fans and indicator lights do not come on. Check the power connection and system-specific power troubleshooting.
- Power, but no display: fans or lights run, but the monitor remains blank. This may be memory training or a display-related problem, among other possibilities.
- POST failure: the system does not complete its initial hardware checks. Diagnostic indicators can help identify the stage, but consult the motherboard manual.
- POST completes, but the operating system does not load: the fault may be beyond basic memory detection; note any error message or recovery screen.
Give the first startup time to train memory
After a memory configuration change, a computer may take longer than usual to start while it trains the memory. Kingston says a temporary black screen during startup can occur and advises leaving the system powered on for at least 10 minutes before taking further steps if the screen remains blank. If it still has not progressed, power it off and check the configuration. Follow different instructions if your computer or motherboard maker gives model-specific guidance. See Kingston’s memory support guidance.
Reseat the RAM and verify the slots
- Shut down and disconnect power. Follow the computer or motherboard manual’s safety instructions before handling components.
- Check the slot order. Use the board’s memory-population diagram; do not assume the same slots are correct on every motherboard. MSI’s examples use DIMMA2 for one module and DIMMA2 plus DIMMB2 for two, but MSI cautions that installation methods vary by board. See its memory installation instructions.
- Reinstall the module. Align its notch with the key in the slot and press evenly until it is held securely by the retention mechanism. If a module is not fully seated, the system may fail to start or detect it.
- Check detection if you can enter BIOS. If the firmware does not show the expected memory, power down and reinstall the modules before moving on.
Test one module and slot at a time
If the system still fails to POST, use the motherboard manual’s recommended single-module configuration. If necessary, test each stick separately and then test other available slots, noting which combinations start successfully. Intel also recommends testing modules individually and in different slots in its memory troubleshooting guidance.

A successful one-stick test narrows the possibilities, but does not by itself prove that a particular module or slot is defective. Results can also depend on the configuration, firmware, motherboard, or CPU memory controller. If this was an upgrade, test the previous working configuration if it is available. Avoid mixing kits while diagnosing; modules with the same advertised speed are not necessarily validated to work together.
Check compatibility and return memory settings to defaults
Look up the exact motherboard or prebuilt-PC model and check its supported memory generation, capacity, module configuration, and manufacturer guidance. Check the CPU platform requirements where the system maker provides them. A product label alone does not establish that a particular kit or configuration is supported.

If you can enter BIOS, restore memory settings to their defaults while troubleshooting. A performance profile such as XMP can cause startup failure even when the modules work at standard settings. Compatibility guidance is platform-specific: for example, ASRock’s 2017 FAQ for some AM4 configurations warns that high-frequency modules may not work successfully with XMP and advises checking its current BIOS and supported-memory list. That guidance should not be generalized to other platforms or current systems.
Clear CMOS only with the exact board instructions
If reseating and single-module tests do not restore POST, clearing CMOS may reset firmware settings that are unsuitable for the changed memory configuration. AMD and MSI include CMOS clearing in their troubleshooting guidance. Use the procedure in the manual for your exact motherboard, and disconnect power as instructed. MSI’s example procedure specifies disconnecting the power supply and either shorting designated JBAT1 pins or removing the battery for five minutes; those pin names and timing are not universal. See MSI’s no-display guidance and the AMD guidance linked above.

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Consider a BIOS update cautiously
A BIOS update may improve DRAM compatibility, but only use firmware and instructions for the exact motherboard or prebuilt-system model. Kingston advises following the computer maker’s update instructions, and Intel recommends installing a newer BIOS when the motherboard vendor advises it. Do not flash firmware because a similar model name appears to match. Some boards support updating from a USB drive without a normal boot; availability and steps vary, so check the exact model’s manual and vendor instructions first.
Check display connections and get help if needed
If reseating the RAM has not helped, check that cables remain connected. When the system powers on but shows no image, also verify the monitor connection and graphics-card seating, following the computer or motherboard maker’s instructions. If the PC still fails after supported memory tests and model-specific recovery steps, contact the system or motherboard maker or a qualified repair service. Controlled testing may be needed to distinguish memory, motherboard, CPU, power, or display hardware faults.

If replacement memory appears necessary
Do not buy a replacement kit just because the PC failed to start after an upgrade. First use the tests above and check the exact system’s support information. If those checks point to faulty or unsupported RAM, compare candidate kits by the DDR generation supported, motherboard and CPU compatibility, capacity and number of modules, rated speed and whether it requires XMP or another profile, and return and warranty terms. Manufacturer compatibility lists and manuals are the relevant references for your system; no particular kit can be recommended without its model details.
