A newer, more expensive router can deliver worse results than its predecessor, but there is no single hidden setting that explains every slowdown. Start by separating your internet connection from your Wi-Fi, then check channel congestion and channel width, router placement, and features such as QoS one at a time.

First find out whether the problem is your internet connection or Wi-Fi

A speed test over Wi-Fi measures both the route to your internet provider and the wireless link between your device and router. A poor result alone cannot tell you which part is responsible.

  1. Record the comparison. Note the device, test location, whether it is wired or wireless, and—if your device shows it—which band it uses: 2.4, 5, or 6 GHz. Compare the old and new routers using the same device and similar conditions; a wired result is not comparable to a distant Wi-Fi test.
  2. Run a wired baseline if your setup permits. Connect a computer directly to the modem with Ethernet, then run a speed test. TP-Link recommends a direct-to-modem check and Cat6 or higher cable for this connection: TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting guide. If this result is also poor, investigate the modem, service, or connection beyond Wi-Fi. If it is strong while Wi-Fi is slow, focus on the wireless link or router configuration.
  3. Compare Wi-Fi near the router and in the problem room. Use the same device and test method in both places. Walls, obstructions, router position, and the client device can all affect the result. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance discusses placement and testing after changes.

Keep the same speed-test service or endpoint where possible. This makes repeated results more useful, though internet speed tests can still vary.

Check channel congestion before changing channel width

Nearby networks can compete for radio airtime. Microsoft recommends checking a Wi-Fi analyzer’s network graph to see which channels nearby networks use. If your router allows manual channel selection, follow its manufacturer’s instructions, try a less crowded channel, and retest in the same location.

Channel width is related but distinct: it describes how much radio spectrum a Wi-Fi connection uses. Wider channels can carry more data under suitable conditions, but they are not automatically faster in a crowded environment or for every device. ASUS notes that channel width affects both wireless speed and signal stability: ASUS router channel-bandwidth guidance.

Why 2.4 GHz may benefit from 20 MHz

On the 2.4 GHz band, a 40 MHz channel can cause reliability or compatibility problems for some older adapters. Microsoft suggests trying 20 MHz in those circumstances. A narrower channel may trade potential peak throughput for a more dependable connection in a congested setting. Do not change every band to the widest setting by default; compare results with the same device and location.

When a wider channel may help

A wider channel can provide more throughput when the band is relatively clear and the router and client both support it. But a wider channel occupies more spectrum, which can be a poor fit where neighboring networks compete for airtime. The best choice depends on the band, local congestion, client compatibility, and whether the slowdown occurs close to the router or farther away.

Test router features without losing track of your settings

QoS (Quality of Service) and parental controls are possible factors to rule out, not proven causes of every slowdown. TP-Link includes them among settings to test during troubleshooting. If either is enabled, record its current configuration, temporarily disable just that feature, and repeat the same test. Restore it if the results do not improve or if you need it.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Change one setting at a time. If you adjust channel selection, width, and QoS together, an improved or worse result will not reveal which change mattered.

Check placement, client support, firmware, and security

  • Placement: Compare performance near the router with performance in the room where the problem occurs. A location with fewer obstructions may improve the wireless link.
  • Client capability: A router’s newer band does not help a device that cannot use it. In particular, 6 GHz requires support from both router and client, and is most useful close to the router.
  • Firmware: Check the manufacturer’s guidance and update availability for your exact router model. Apple says updates can improve Wi-Fi stability, performance, and security in its recommended Wi-Fi router settings. Menu names and options vary by model and firmware, so there is no reliable universal path or ideal value to give without those details.
  • Security: Do not weaken Wi-Fi security to chase speed. Hiding the network name (SSID) is not a security measure and may expose identifying information, according to Apple’s guidance.

Retest in a way that identifies the cause

  1. Choose one device, one test service, and a repeatable location.
  2. Note the current band and router settings before making a change.
  3. Change one item—such as channel, channel width, or one enabled feature—and run the test again.
  4. Compare like with like, including tests near the router and in the problem room if relevant.
  5. Keep a change only if the results improve for your actual use; restore the original setting otherwise.

Microsoft specifically recommends rerunning speed tests after network changes. This simple before-and-after approach is more informative than assuming that the most expensive router should always be faster or that one setting is universally at fault.
