When every copy your library has licensed is checked out, you must place a hold—even though the book is delivered online. You can look for the exact title in your library’s other collections, check other libraries you’re eligible to use, or manage your hold while you wait.
Why is there a waitlist for a digital audiobook?
Digital delivery does not necessarily mean unlimited access. Libby Help explains that publishers often require each digital copy to be loaned to one person at a time, much like a physical book. When all the copies a library has licensed are in use, the app offers a hold queue. Libby Help (last updated February 26, 2026) describes this as a publisher licensing requirement.
That is not the only model. OverDrive documents both One Copy/One User lending and subscription models that can allow unlimited simultaneous borrowers. A waitlist depends on the rights attached to that title and the library’s collection—not on a technical limit that applies to every digital audiobook. Licenses can limit more than simultaneous borrowers
Depending on the title and its license, a library may also have a limit on how long it can offer access or how many times a copy can be checked out. When a license expires, the library may need to buy access again. King County Library System gives examples of metered licenses that expire after 26 checkouts, 52 checkouts, or 24 months; those are examples from its collection, not standard terms for every library or audiobook. More copies may help, but they are not guaranteed
A library may be able to license additional copies if its budget and the publisher’s terms allow it. That does not mean it can always add copies or that it will do so for every popular title. Libby Help notes that purchasing more copies depends on the library’s budget.
How to find the audiobook sooner
- Search the exact title in your library’s other audio apps. Some libraries offer more than one digital collection, so check the services listed on your library’s website or in its catalog. Hoopla is an option only if your library currently provides it. Services can change: Boston Public Library lists Libby and Palace and says it discontinued Hoopla after September 30, 2025. Boston Public Library’s digital services page lists its current offerings.
- Look for a no-wait copy or selection in Libby. Your library’s Libby collection may include available copies or a no-wait collection. Glenview Public Library points readers to Libby’s Lucky Day collection for titles available without a hold, though selection depends on the library and the title. Glenview Public Library’s FAQ describes this option.
- Check other library catalogs where you are eligible for a card. You may have access through your home library, local residency, work or study, or a library agreement. Check each library’s eligibility and digital-lending rules; do not assume that another library will issue or accept a card just because you live nearby.
- Keep, suspend, or cancel your Libby hold as needed. Libby lets you see your place in the queue and manage a hold. When a hold becomes available, you have 72 hours to borrow it, suspend it, or cancel it. See Libby’s instructions for managing holds and check your library’s own guidance.
- Consider another format or a paid option if you need this title immediately. Ask whether your library has a physical copy, or check whether the audiobook is available to buy or through a paid listening service. Availability is title-specific. Boston Public Library’s Palace description notes that some titles in its collection are exclusive to Audible and Amazon Publishing; that does not establish that a particular audiobook is available from either service. BPL’s digital services page describes its Palace collection.
What to compare before switching collections
Finding the title in another app does not by itself mean you can borrow or play it under the same terms. Before placing a hold or starting a loan, check:

- Whether the exact audiobook is in the catalog and available now.
- Whether you need a particular library card or meet residency or membership rules.
- The loan period and renewal rules.
- Any checkout, ticket, or spending limits.
- Whether the app works on your phone, tablet, or other listening device.
For example, Glenview Public Library’s FAQ lists a ten-item monthly Hoopla limit and a 21-day audiobook loan. Those figures apply to Glenview’s service and should not be assumed for other libraries. Glenview Public Library’s FAQ has its local terms.

There is no reliable general wait-time figure for library audiobooks. The queue depends on the title, the number of licensed copies, how many people are ahead of you, and when those loans return. Check the estimate shown for that title in your library’s app or catalog; it is more relevant than a system-wide average.
