A high-wattage USB-C charger can still charge a laptop slowly because its rating is a maximum capability, not a promise of power the laptop will take. Charging speed depends on the laptop’s supported input, the USB Power Delivery (USB PD) profile the devices negotiate, the cable, the charger port’s available output, and the laptop’s workload and battery settings. Start by checking your exact laptop model’s charging requirements, then verify the charger output and cable rating.
Why a high-wattage charger may not charge faster
USB-C describes a connector and cable system; USB Power Delivery is a separate charging protocol. A USB-C plug alone does not prove that a charger and laptop support compatible USB PD charging. USB-IF notes that USB-C products can have different power and performance capabilities, depending on what their manufacturers implement (USB-IF USB Power Delivery overview; USB-IF USB Type-C overview).
With USB PD, the charger advertises supported power options and the laptop requests a compatible amount. The laptop does not have to accept the charger’s maximum output. USB PD 3.1 supports up to 240W with suitable implementations, but that is a standard capability—not a typical laptop charging rate or a guarantee that a particular laptop can accept 240W (USB-IF USB Power Delivery overview).
For charging to reach the level your laptop supports, the laptop, charger, cable, and connected port must all be suitable. A multiport adapter may also divide output among ports or provide different output from each one. Check the adapter’s output table and manual for the port in use, particularly if another device is connected.

What can limit charging speed?
The laptop’s supported input power
Laptops have model-specific charging requirements and input limits. Find the full model name and year, then check the manufacturer’s specifications or charging guide. Apple recommends at least the minimum wattage specified for the Mac model for the best charging experience; Microsoft similarly recommends the power supply specified for the Surface model (Apple: Use a power adapter with your Mac; Microsoft: Surface power supplies and charging).
A charger rated above the laptop’s supported input will not necessarily increase charging speed. Conversely, a charger with a high headline rating might not provide the specific output the laptop requires.

The charger’s USB PD support or output profile
Check the adapter’s label for its output options, which may list voltage and current for each profile, and confirm that the adapter supports USB PD. Total wattage alone does not establish which profiles are available. Compatibility can depend on the laptop as well as the charger; Microsoft notes that some PCs may not accept some USB chargers (Microsoft: Fix USB-C problems in Windows).
The cable’s power rating
A cable can limit the power available even when the charger and laptop are capable of more. Check the cable’s own marking or product specifications rather than judging by connector shape, data speed, or an unsupported seller claim. USB-IF’s cable compliance program uses 60W and 240W power markings for USB-C to USB-C cables (USB-IF compliance update; USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification). Those markings are useful evidence of capability for products covered by the program; an unmarked cable is not automatically unsafe or unusable, but its power capacity should not be assumed.

Do not buy a 240W cable just because the charger says 140W or 240W. First determine the power your laptop can use and whether the current cable is below the requirement.
The laptop is connected to a non-charging port
Some laptops have USB-C ports with different functions, and not every USB-C port accepts power input. Check the model’s documentation for a port identified as supporting charging or USB PD input. Microsoft lists use of the wrong port as a possible cause of charging problems (Microsoft: Fix USB-C problems in Windows).

Workload, battery settings, or temperature
If the laptop is doing demanding work, it may consume much of the incoming power; battery gain can be slow or the charge can fall if power use meets or exceeds input. Microsoft recommends trying to charge a Windows PC while it is asleep or off as a troubleshooting step. That comparison can help isolate workload, but it does not prove that workload is the cause (Microsoft: Fix USB-C problems in Windows).
A pause or a charge stop short of full is not always slow charging. On supported Macs, Apple documents “Charging On Hold” with Optimized Battery Charging and charge-limit statuses; its support guidance also identifies a “Slow Charger” status (Apple: If your Mac battery won’t charge). These states have different causes from an adapter that cannot provide enough power.

Temperature can affect manufacturer-specific fast-charging claims. Microsoft says Surface Fast Charging requires sufficient power and an ambient temperature of 25°C to 35°C; it also describes charging up to 80% in about an hour on most devices under the stated conditions. Those figures apply to Microsoft’s Surface guidance, not to all laptops (Microsoft: Fast charging for Surface).

- Identify the laptop precisely. Record the full model and year. Find the manufacturer’s recommended charger power and confirm that the USB-C port you plan to use accepts charging.
- Check the charger output for that port. Read the output table on the adapter and confirm USB PD support. For a multiport charger, consult its manual to see what output remains available when other devices are connected.
- Check the cable rating. Look for a power marking on the cable or verify the rating in its specifications. Compare it with the laptop’s requirements; do not assume connector shape or data-rate claims establish charging capacity.
- Connect directly to the documented charging port. If the adapter has multiple ports, disconnect other devices temporarily. Observe whether the operating system’s charging status changes. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee that shared output is the cause.
- Read the battery status and settings. Look for low-power, charging-hold, or charge-limit messages. On Macs, Apple documents distinct “Slow Charger,” “Charging On Hold,” and charge-limit states in supported software (Apple: If your Mac battery won’t charge).
- Compare charging at lower workload. If practical, check whether charging changes while the laptop is asleep or off. Microsoft recommends this as a Windows troubleshooting step (Microsoft: Fix USB-C problems in Windows).
- Inspect the hardware if the setup still underperforms. Check the laptop port, cable, and adapter for visible damage. If a compatible, model-recommended setup continues to charge abnormally, follow the laptop maker’s troubleshooting or service instructions.
When should you replace the charger or cable?
Replace or change a component only after comparing it with the laptop’s documented requirements. If the adapter does not support the needed USB PD profile or cannot supply enough power at the port in use, choose one that matches the laptop maker’s recommendation. If the cable’s rated power is below what the setup requires, use a suitably rated cable. A higher wattage label by itself is not a reason to upgrade.
If a compatible, model-recommended adapter and cable still underperform, seek help from the laptop manufacturer rather than buying progressively higher-wattage equipment. USB-C charging depends on the whole connection and the laptop’s condition, not just one number printed on the charger.
