Your iPhone may be changing brightness because Auto-Brightness responds to the light around you, or because the phone is hot enough to limit display output. Color settings, attention detection, and the locked-screen display can also make the screen look or behave differently. Check when the change happens first, then use the matching fix below.
Identify what is changing the screen
Notice when the dimming starts. A change as you move between bright and dark places points to Auto-Brightness. Dimming while the phone is hot—especially in direct sun, during navigation, camera use, gaming, or charging—may be thermal protection. If only the colors look different, check True Tone, Night Shift, or Dark Mode. Dimming while locked or when you look away may be normal attention or idle-display behavior.

These features are not available on every iPhone, and menu options can vary by model and iOS version. Apple explains that iOS uses an ambient-light sensor to adjust brightness to surrounding conditions in its brightness and color temperature guidance.
Adjust Auto-Brightness or set brightness manually
Auto-Brightness is on by default. Apple says it lowers brightness in dark surroundings and raises it in brighter ones; with the feature enabled, the brightness slider can move as ambient light changes.

- Open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness.
- If the adjustment seems wrong, turn Auto-Brightness off and then back on, as Apple recommends.
- For an immediate manual change, drag the brightness control in Control Center, or open Settings > Display & Brightness.
Turning Auto-Brightness off can increase power use. Manual adjustment changes the current brightness but does not prevent thermal protection or other display behavior from affecting the screen later.
Let a hot iPhone cool down
When an iPhone’s internal temperature exceeds its normal operating range, it may dim the display or turn it black as part of thermal protection. Heat can build during prolonged direct sun, navigation, camera use, intensive games, wireless charging, or high-quality video playback.

- Move the iPhone out of direct sunlight and away from other heat sources.
- Pause demanding use or charging and allow the device to cool.
- Do not treat Apple’s stated ambient operating range of 0–35 °C (32–95 °F) as an exact internal temperature at which dimming begins. Apple gives that range as operating guidance, not a dimming threshold, in its guidance for an iPhone or iPad that gets too hot or too cold.
Check whether the screen looks different rather than dimmer
True Tone adapts color and intensity to ambient light, while Night Shift makes colors warmer. Either can make the display appear changed without being the same as a brightness reduction. Temporarily turn them off to compare the screen: use Settings > Display & Brightness, or expand the brightness controls in Control Center. If the change is a dark interface rather than a shifting brightness level, check Dark Mode under Display & Brightness.
Check attention and locked-screen behavior
Attention Aware on Face ID models
Attention Aware can keep the display from dimming while you are looking at it. If screen timing seems to change when you look away, review Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Attention Aware Features. This feature applies to supported Face ID models; Apple’s Attention Aware guidance describes the behavior.

Always-On Display on supported models
An Always-On Display can dim when the iPhone is locked or idle and may turn fully dark in situations such as when the phone is face down or in a pocket. Review Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display if the change happens only in those circumstances. Availability and behavior depend on the iPhone model and iOS version; see Apple’s Always-On Display guidance.

If the display remains abnormally dim when the iPhone is cool and the settings above do not explain it, contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider. Dimming by itself does not establish that the ambient-light sensor has failed. Apple says service may be needed for persistent screen trouble in its iPhone screen guidance.
