A game closing by itself, a Windows blue screen, a system freeze, and a sudden power-off are different symptoms—and they do not point to the same cause. A game-only crash does not establish that your PC has a hardware fault. A stop code or unexpected restart can involve hardware, a driver, or software, so the useful first step is to identify exactly what happened and then test the most likely causes safely.

First identify what “crashing” means

Before changing settings or replacing parts, write down the affected game, when the problem occurs, any recent Windows, driver, app, or hardware changes, and what the computer does next. Note whether the game closes to the desktop, Windows displays a blue screen, the entire PC freezes, the display goes black, or the computer restarts or powers off. If Windows shows a stop code, record its exact wording and any “What failed” module name.

Microsoft says a stop error may be caused by a hardware device, its driver, or software. The code and module name are clues to investigate, not proof that a particular component has failed. [Microsoft’s blue screen troubleshooting guide]

  • Only one game closes: Start with that game and recent app or driver changes. This symptom alone does not show that the whole PC is faulty.
  • Windows shows a stop code or restarts: Record the code and investigate Windows, driver, and hardware evidence.
  • The PC freezes or powers off under load: Check whether the pattern coincides with gaming load, heat, or a recent change; do not assume a specific component is defective.

Try reversible software checks first

If the problem started after a change

Make a timeline of when the crashes began and what changed just before them: a Windows update, graphics driver, game or utility installation, new peripheral, or hardware upgrade. If there is a clear connection, investigate that change first. Microsoft recommends removing recently added hardware as a test for stop-code problems. If the issue began after an update, uninstalling that update may help; choose the least disruptive recovery option that fits the problem. Back up important files before recovery actions because some options can cause data loss. Check Windows basics

For a Windows stop-code issue, Microsoft’s basic checks include starting in Safe Mode if needed, checking Device Manager for device problems, ensuring Windows is up to date, and checking free disk space. Microsoft advises keeping 10% to 15% of the drive free for swap files and other functions; this is general Windows guidance, not a gaming-crash threshold, and requirements vary by system configuration. If simpler checks do not help, System Restore may be an option. [Microsoft’s blue screen troubleshooting guide]

Use drivers from Windows Update or the device or PC manufacturer rather than unofficial driver-download sites. If a crash began immediately after a driver change, consider the manufacturer’s supported rollback or recovery steps rather than making several changes at once.

  • High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.

Use crash evidence to narrow the cause

Check for matching Windows errors

Open Event Viewer and look for critical or system errors at the time of the freeze, restart, or blue screen. A matching event can help establish whether Windows logged a problem, but an event by itself may not identify the failed part. Compare its timestamp with your notes and any stop code before deciding what to test next.

Investigate memory if the symptoms support it

Windows Memory Diagnostic is a built-in next step when memory is a concern. A detected error is useful evidence; a clean or inconclusive result does not prove every memory module or other component is healthy. If you changed memory speed or overclock settings before the instability began, return to manufacturer-supported defaults as an isolation test instead of assuming the hardware is defective. AMD lists unstable overclocking, overheating, and memory issues among possible contributors to system instability. [AMD system stability troubleshooting]

Follow up on recurring stop codes

If the same stop code keeps returning, use the exact code to find the relevant Microsoft or PC-maker guidance. For a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, Microsoft describes the error as hardware-related, but that label does not identify which component is responsible in an individual PC. Avoid repeatedly changing BIOS settings without a specific test plan. [Microsoft’s blue screen troubleshooting guide]

Check temperature and power when the pattern points there

Look for signs of overheating

Heat deserves attention if crashes occur during demanding play alongside symptoms such as the system shutting down after a short time, reduced operating frequency, throttling, general slowness, or unusually loud fans. Intel lists these as possible overheating symptoms for self-built systems with Intel boxed processors; they are not a universal temperature threshold for every CPU, GPU, or prebuilt PC. Check temperatures using the guidance for your specific hardware, and consult the PC maker if it is a prebuilt system. [Intel: identify and resolve processor overheating]

Consider whether the power supply suits the whole system

For random restarts under heavy load, check whether the PSU is suitable for the complete system, including its graphics card and other components. Intel’s guidance is scoped to systems using Intel boxed processors; AMD also lists an insufficient or faulty PSU as a possible cause of crashes, hangs, and reboots. These sources do not establish one correct wattage for an unspecified PC, and a restart alone does not prove the PSU is faulty. Use the requirements and support guidance for your actual components. Isolate hardware only when basic checks are not enough

Physical checks are a more advanced step, particularly on a prebuilt PC or a system still covered by warranty. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and do not open equipment if doing so would create a safety or warranty problem. Intel’s reseating and cleaning suggestions below address a specific Intel Arc A770 gaming-reboot case, so treat them as possible isolation steps—not a universal fix. • With the PC powered off and handled according to the manufacturer’s instructions, check that the GPU and RAM are seated correctly if you are competent to do so.
  • Remove dust gently from components or slots only as the manufacturer permits; cleaning is maintenance, not evidence that dust caused the crash.
  • Where practical, test with known-good components or an essential-component configuration to isolate a fault. Change one thing at a time and record whether the symptom changes.

Do not buy a replacement GPU, PSU, RAM kit, cooler, or motherboard based solely on the fact that a game crashed. A defensible part replacement requires evidence and compatibility details for the specific build.

When to get manufacturer or repair support

Contact the PC or component manufacturer, or a qualified repair professional, if the same stop code recurs, Windows logs hardware-error events, the PC repeatedly powers off under load, or the problem persists after basic software checks. Share your symptom notes, stop code and module name if present, Event Viewer timestamps, recent changes, and tests already performed. That evidence is more useful than a general report that the gaming PC “keeps crashing.”
