An external SSD’s advertised speed is a best-case reference, not a promise that every file copy will run at that rate. The result depends on the full connection—from the SSD through its cable and any hub to the computer—as well as the source drive, file workload, write-cache behavior, heat, and activity on the computer. Start by checking the connection and comparing like-for-like transfers before concluding that the SSD is faulty.

What the advertised speed does—and does not—tell you

Manufacturer speed figures are measured under particular conditions. SanDisk says its stated speeds are based on internal testing and may vary with the host device, usage conditions, and other factors (SanDisk Support). A peak sequential figure is therefore a reference for favorable conditions, not a guaranteed speed for every copy operation.

Keep read and write speeds distinct: reading from the SSD and writing to it are different operations, and a product’s stated peak may not describe both. Real file-copy speed also reflects the rest of the system, not just the SSD.

Common reasons an external SSD is slower

A slower port, cable, hub, or adapter

The connection is only as fast as its limiting component. The SSD, computer port, cable, adapter, hub, and—if applicable—enclosure must all support the relevant data interface. USB-C describes the connector shape; it does not, on its own, tell you the data rate. A charging cable or a cable rated for a slower data link can also hold back a drive (SanDisk Support; Seagate Support; USB-IF).

The source or file workload is limiting the copy

When copying from another drive, the source must be able to supply data quickly enough for the external SSD to receive it. A copy of many small files is also different from a single large-file transfer: file-by-file work can reduce the observed rate. Background indexing, scans, or other programs may compete for computer resources as well (SanDisk Support; Seagate Support).

The write cache has filled during a long transfer

Some drives can accept an initial burst of writes into a cache, then write more slowly after that cache fills. Seagate describes this as one reason performance can drop during a sustained write (Seagate Support). A fast start followed by a lower, steady rate is a different pattern from a transfer that is slow from the outset.

Heat, limited free space, or host activity

Heat during sustained activity and insufficient free space are also possible contributors, according to SanDisk’s support guidance (SanDisk Support). Other active programs, indexing, or scans can affect the computer’s ability to handle the transfer. These possibilities are worth checking, but none alone proves the drive is defective.

SSK Portable SSD 500GB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
  1. Check the SSD and computer port. Confirm the exact SSD model and its published interface. Look up the computer port’s supported data rate in the computer documentation; do not infer it from the port’s connector shape.
  2. Connect directly. Temporarily remove the dock, hub, adapter, or extension cable and connect the SSD straight to the computer. If the transfer improves, reintroduce one component at a time to identify what changes the result.
  3. Verify the data cable. Use the supplied cable or one whose stated data-rate rating matches the SSD and computer port. If shopping for a USB-C 10Gbps data cable, first confirm that both devices support that interface; a cable cannot make a slower port faster.
  4. Use a fast source and a large file. Copy one large file from a source you know is fast, then compare that result with a transfer involving many small files. The two workloads are not directly interchangeable.
  5. Watch the transfer over time. Note whether the speed is low from the beginning or starts high and declines. A later drop can be consistent with cache exhaustion or heat during sustained activity; the pattern is a clue, not a diagnosis by itself.
  6. Reduce other variables. Check that the SSD has reasonable free space, pause unnecessary scans or heavy programs if appropriate, and allow a hot drive to cool before repeating the comparison. Keep the source, connection, file, and transfer direction the same.
  7. Try another computer if the gap persists. A compatible port and cable on another host can help distinguish a host limitation from an SSD or connection issue. Back up important files before any destructive diagnostic step or reformatting.

For each comparison, record the read or write direction, source, connection path, file type or size, and transfer duration. This makes it easier to see which change mattered without treating one result as proof of a fault.

How to compare speed claims fairly

Compare like with like: use the same host, port, cable, source, file size or workload, and read/write direction. A short sequential benchmark and a prolonged real-world copy measure different conditions; their results should not be treated as directly equivalent.

There is no universal real-world speed threshold or percentage shortfall that establishes an external SSD is defective. If results remain far below the expectations documented for your exact model across a known-compatible setup, check the manufacturer’s guidance for that model before deciding what to do next.
