Your Ethernet link speed and your Internet speed are different measurements. The link speed shown by your computer is the rate negotiated between its Ethernet adapter and the router or switch; it is not the speed your Internet provider delivers. Check both: a low link rate points first to the cable, ports, adapter, or link negotiation, while a high link rate with slow Internet results points farther upstream or to test conditions.
Check the Ethernet link speed and Internet speed separately
Start by noting the computer’s negotiated Ethernet link rate, then run an Internet speed test over that wired connection and record the download and upload results. Repeat under similar conditions when comparing devices or network paths; one speed-test result alone does not identify a faulty component.
Windows
- Press Windows+R, enter
ncpa.cpl, and press Enter. - Right-click Ethernet and choose Status.
- Note the value shown for Speed. It is the local link rate, not your Internet speed. These steps are provided by TP-Link’s link-speed guide.
macOS
Open System Settings → Network → Ethernet → Details → Hardware and look for Ethernet hardware or link-speed information. Menu labels can vary by macOS release; TP-Link’s guide describes this route.
Why Ethernet may show only 100 Mbps
A connection negotiates only as fast as its slowest relevant part: the computer’s adapter, the router or switch port, and any intermediate equipment or cabling. If the link reports 100 Mbps when you expected Gigabit Ethernet, check for a 100 Mbps-capable port or adapter, a cable or termination problem, or another device in the path such as a wall jack, dock, switch, or USB adapter. A Cat6 label cannot make a 100 Mbps port operate at Gigabit speed.

Check negotiation settings
For Intel Gigabit adapters, Intel recommends Auto Negotiation at both ends and a Gigabit-capable device at the other end. Intel Support’s article, last reviewed November 28, 2022, says: “Gigabit recommended setting is Auto-negotiation.” This advice is specific to Intel adapters; forcing a speed or duplex setting is not a universal fix. See Intel’s Gigabit troubleshooting guidance.
Reseat the cable and test the physical path
- Unplug and firmly reseat the Ethernet cable at the computer and router or switch.
- Confirm the router end is in a LAN port, not the port intended for the modem or Internet connection.
- Swap in a known-good cable and check whether the link rate changes. Microsoft recommends checking both cable ends and trying another cable; Intel likewise recommends a proven cable when troubleshooting Gigabit links. See Microsoft’s Windows network troubleshooting steps and Intel’s guidance.
- If the cable runs through a wall jack, switch, dock, or USB adapter, bypass one item at a time where practical to isolate the path.
Verify the supported speed of the computer adapter and every port along the route. Intel also recommends checking all cabling and trying a known-good Cat6-or-better cable for a suspected Gigabit cabling problem. Replacing cable is a diagnostic step, not a promise of faster Internet.

Each Cat 6 internet cable 6 ft goes through rigorous testing to ensure a secure wired internet connection with exceptional speed and reliability.
- Support – Cat6 Ethernet cable with CM grade PVC jacket complies with TIA/EIA 568-C.2, is ETL verified and RoHS compliant. If an item is defective or breaks within a year, we will issue a replacement. For questions or concerns please contact our friendly, USA-based customer Support team.
When cable category and length matter
Cable capability depends on the equipment and installation, not just the category printed on the jacket. As one model-specific example, Cisco documents its C9350 multigigabit switch ports as supporting 1, 2.5, and 5 Gbps over Cat5e, and up to 10 Gbps over Cat6 or Cat6A. In that switch-family documentation, 10 Gbps over Cat6 is limited to 55 m, while Cat6A can support 10 Gbps up to 100 m under specified conditions. Cisco cautions that cable condition and termination quality can affect performance; those figures are not a guarantee for other devices or home installations. See Cisco’s C9350 cabling specifications.
Find out whether the computer, router, or ISP is the bottleneck
Compare another device on the same Ethernet path
Connect another computer to the same cable and port if possible. If only one computer is slow, investigate that computer’s cable connection, adapter, or driver. If several wired devices are slow, compare wired and Wi-Fi results and restart the modem and router according to their manufacturers’ instructions. Microsoft recommends checking the router connection, trying another cable, restarting network equipment, and comparing another PC to narrow the cause; its page applies to Windows 10 and 11, and notes that Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. See Microsoft Support.

Compare router and direct-modem results, if your setup permits
If your ISP arrangement allows a computer to connect directly to the modem, compare that result with the normal router-connected result. TP-Link says matching slow results in both configurations point toward the modem or ISP, while a faster direct-modem result points toward the router or its configuration. A direct connection may not be available or appropriate for every ISP setup. Disconnect the test connection and restore the normal modem-to-router arrangement afterward. See TP-Link’s slow-Internet troubleshooting guide.
Check the adapter driver only after simpler checks
If the physical path checks out and the problem is limited to one computer—particularly if it began after a system update—check the adapter driver and the computer or adapter maker’s support page. Before uninstalling a driver, download a backup from the manufacturer. Microsoft says Windows can attempt to reinstall the adapter driver after you restart. Network reset is a later option: Microsoft says, “Using network reset should be the last step you try.” Both recommendations are Windows-specific; see Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.

- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Buy equipment only when a test points to it
- Ethernet cable: Try a known-good cable when swapping it is the next useful diagnostic step. Match the cable to the required speed, run length, and installation; Cat6 alone does not raise a connection limited by a slower port.
- USB-to-Ethernet adapter: Consider one if the computer has no built-in Ethernet port or if a compatible second adapter would help compare the computer’s built-in connection. Check compatibility with the computer and the adapter’s supported link speed.
- Cable tester: This is an advanced option for permanent in-wall cabling or higher-rate links, not a default purchase for ordinary home checks. Cisco recommends appropriate cable testing for 5 and 10 Gbps links in the cited switch documentation.
Before replacing anything, check that the proposed adapter, router or switch port, and cable support the rate you need. For a high-speed permanent run, category, length, termination, and cable condition all matter.
