If your MetaTrader daily loss limit clears after a restart, the likely cause is that the Expert Advisor (EA) keeps its baseline, loss counter, or breached-state flag only in memory. When the EA reloads, those ordinary program variables can return to their initial values. To preserve the limit, save and restore the trading-day identifier, baseline, and lock state—and only reset them when the applicable broker or funding-firm trading day changes.
The exact cause depends on the EA’s code and settings; without those, this is a likely explanation, not a diagnosis of a specific EA.
Why a restart can erase the limit
MetaTrader runs an EA as a program. If the EA stores its daily baseline, accumulated loss, or “limit breached” flag in ordinary variables, those values exist only while that program instance is running. Reinitializing the EA can assign them their defaults again, making the guard behave as if the day has just started.
This is separate from open positions: position data is held by the broker and can be read again after reconnection, while EA-created counters and flags need to be saved if they must survive a process restart. What the EA must remember
At minimum, persistence should cover three related pieces of state:
- Trading-day identifier: the date or timestamp associated with the current risk period.
- Daily baseline: the balance, equity, or other value from which the limit is calculated.
- Lock state: whether the loss threshold has already been breached and new entries must remain blocked.
On initialization, the EA should load these values and compare the saved day identifier with the currently applicable trading day. If it is still the same day, it should keep the saved baseline and lock state. It should establish a new baseline and clear the daily lock only after the defined reset boundary has passed. A restart alone is not a new trading day.

The right implementation still depends on your account’s rules and the EA’s design.
Choose how to persist EA state
For a few numeric values, MetaTrader terminal global variables are one option. They are distinct from ordinary variables declared in EA source: terminal global variables are available independently of the EA, are shared among programs in the terminal, and persist across platform starts. MetaQuotes documents that they are deleted after four weeks without access, so they are not indefinite archival storage. Because terminal global variables share a namespace, use a clear, unique key that distinguishes the account and strategy. Otherwise, two EAs can overwrite each other’s values. For a coherent record with several related fields, a local state file can be more suitable; the MQL5 binary-file article above discusses that approach. The choice is about the state you need to preserve: a handful of numeric fields or a structured record.
Make the reset match the account’s actual rule
“Daily loss” does not have one universal calculation. A guard can preserve state perfectly and still be wrong if it uses a different day boundary or P&L formula from the governing account agreement.

- Reset time: Use the broker server’s day boundary only if that matches the broker’s or funding firm’s rule. Server midnight can differ from local midnight; the applicable firm-defined rollover controls for a funded account.
- Baseline: Confirm whether the rule is based on opening balance, equity, or another reference. Do not silently recalculate a same-day baseline after a restart or a balance change.
- P&L included: Balance generally reflects closed results, while equity also reflects floating profit or loss. Confirm treatment of swap, commission, deposits, withdrawals, and positions carried across rollover.
- Position rollover: Decide how overnight positions count when the daily period changes. A circuit-breaker example published on MQL5.com on 28 August 2026 calculates realized and floating P&L, includes swap, and halts until the next server midnight; it is an example, not a universal rule. Check where the reset is happening
- Reproduce safely: Use a demo account or Strategy Tester. Record the baseline, loss amount, and breached/locked state before and after a restart.
- Inspect the EA’s storage: Check whether it uses ordinary source-level variables, terminal global-variable functions such as
GlobalVariableSetandGlobalVariableGet, or files. In MQL5, ordinary source variables and terminal global variables are different mechanisms. - Review initialization: Look for code that unconditionally sets the baseline from current balance or equity, or clears the lock when the EA starts. Such logic can erase state even if the EA also has persistence.
- Restore before trading: Load the day identifier, baseline, and breach state before any order-submission logic can run. Save updates when the baseline or lock changes, and scope the key or filename to the account and strategy.
- Test the boundaries: Check an intraday terminal restart, chart reload, EA reattachment, and a restart after the actual day rollover. The first three should preserve same-day state; a new baseline should be created only at the intended reset boundary.
- Verify the loss formula: Test closed loss, floating loss, swap, commission, and overnight positions against the account’s documented rule.
Know what the guard can—and cannot—block
A halt flag inside one EA only affects order logic that checks that flag. It does not automatically stop an unrelated EA on another chart or prevent you from placing an order manually. A shared terminal flag can coordinate cooperating EAs, but manual orders and programs that ignore the flag remain outside that control. If multiple strategies trade the account, each relevant strategy needs to respect a consistently defined account-level lock.

When to ask the EA developer or account provider
If the EA’s source is unavailable, ask its developer whether the day baseline and breach state persist through terminal restarts and what reset time and P&L formula it uses. If the account is funded, compare those settings with the firm’s written rules; do not assume broker midnight or a balance-only calculation is acceptable. Without the EA source, platform details, and account agreement, the reset mechanism and correct rule cannot be confirmed from the symptom alone.
